Unemployment Extension for November 2010 Voted Down - the Waste of Money Begins Again!

Unemployment Extension for November 2010 Voted Down in Congress

Roz Zurko
The unemployment extension for November 2010 has been voted down in the Congress. The Congress is leaving for their Thanksgiving vacation for a week, but there is a chance that they will take another vote before their Christmas holiday break, according to the Huffington Post.

Believe it or not, this is the easiest leg of the unemployment extension journey, once it passes through the House, it goes to the Senate, which is the same place it got hung up for lack of votes during the last extension vote during the summer.

This is beginning to look like the scenario that played out all last summer. The Senate voted the unemployment extension down three different times, as the long term unemployed saw their checks stop, according to CNN. People experienced home foreclosures, eviction notices, repossessed cars, and utilities shut off during the lapse of payment. Some could not find a way to feed their families, without their unemployment benefits.

After all the money, time, and manpower spent on pushing the bill through, the unemployment extension bill finally passed the Senate. This caused another dilemma. Now that there had been a lapse in benefits, the states did not have their computer systems set up for this newest extension payment and all the retro checks that needed to be distributed.

Some states had computer systems a quarter of a century old and computer programmers needed to be hired to set the systems up for the unemployment extension payments.

Other states paid overtime to have their state unemployment employees work through weekends to get he money owed in unemployment extensions and retro payment out.

Most of the states took weeks to get the first round of unemployment extension checks and retro checks out to the unemployed, but others took up to a month or more.

The amount of money the states paid to get their computers set up to pay the unemployment extension, and the amount of overtime and hiring of extra manpower by the states to get the unemployment checks and retro checks delivered was never released for the publics eyes. Chances are the sum was so great, that it would have covered a good chunk of the extension payments.

This was due to the fact that the Senate took so long to pass the unemployment extension bill. The amount of money wasted was astronomical. This appears to be happening all over again.

Even if and when the House passes the unemployment extension bill, the Senate is the biggest hurdle. As of right now they still need three republicans to change their minds on voting for the bill and they are not sure how to go about doing that.

This is nothing more than history repeating itself, which apparently means these branches of the government learned absolutely nothing from the last round of delayed unemployment extension payments. The money that was wasted, which could be spent on the unemployment extension itself, will most likely be wasted again as they fight this bill from both sides of the aisle.

In the mean time, the Congress and the Senate can go to their holiday affairs and celebrate the season from their country homes with their families, as the unemployed don't know where their next meal will be coming from.

As of this point in time, it looks very probable that there will be a lapse in unemployment benefits coverage starting on November 30th. The United States Department of Labor believes that by the end of December, there will be two million long term unemployed who will be without their unemployment benefits, according to the Wall Street Journal. The numbers will be rising fast as each day the unemployment extension bill is not in place.

If unemployment benefits are cut how does one pay their rent and bills and still eat without going on welfare is also government funded. The politicians salaries could be cut a litte because I have been trying for a job over a year now and NOTHING. They are living in luxury while we are just trying to survive. Can you see how unfair this is? I know ! A big barrack will need to be built with so many restrooms so all of us who cant keep a roof over our heads can all live together, right? and the GOV can feed us or would GOV like to see us all homeless on the streets, under viaducts and using boxes for protection from the weather?

I think we should all come together and show the people of the United States how sad this is! This should be considered a State of Emergency!

I find it absolutely appalling that the government that is supposed to work for the people is off on vacation when so many of the people are in such bad circumstances. This is the second extension that has been postponed due to senate vacations! I don't know if I could so readily take time off my work if I know the time off could mean people not being able to feed their families. It seems to me that the elected officials seem to forget that the people's live they are messing with are also the people that elect they to office.

If my parents-in-law didnt work with my family on rent payments, we would be living on the streets. Things are getting bad, and are not going to get any better with people starving. This country is pure evil.

I was laid off in August and my wife was laid off over a year ago. We both cant find ANY work. We both are college educated and have degrees. We did both have high paying jobs, which in our world, means lots of debt and student loans. Debt is the least of our problems (they call 100's of times a day).
We are also new parents, with an 11 month old. We did everything corporate America wanted ... goto school, goto college, get a degree and find a high paying job. What they didnt tell us is that when doing this, you rack up so much debt, that when bad times do strike, your F'ed.
I have over 100k in student loans and with fees and interest, its well over 200k by now.
We can barely eat. We didnt receive our unemployment check today, so we have 1 dollar cash ONLY. We have almost NO food and we need baby food and diapers.
I'm NOT looking for a handout, but rather looking for a job.
I DONT see the government doing nothing to help. They rather help the big banks and other natio

This is one of the biggest atrocities, we can find money to help other countries who could care less about us and cannot take care of our own!

A ridiculous state of affairs. I wrote a couple articles on the 99ers, who stand to gain another 4 million among their number by the end of Feb. if nothing is passed. Can you imagine over 8 million people of working age trying to find work and not being able to? Hey, don't worry. Imagine no more. Our friendly pro-millionaire Republican-filibustered/blocking/controlled government will actualize it -- no imagination necessary...

This is devastating to me. I am a single mother who has been laid off twice in one year. My state, Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the nation. My benefits will run out Nov 30th. I have no money AT ALL! My son and I will be homeless. I have worked since I was 16 and NEVER collected unemployment or any welfare AT ALL! I found a part-time job and then they shut the business down. If I just sat around and didn't bother to accept a p-time job, I could be on my next tier and all would be okay for the holidays. I went from making $800/week to 400/week on unemployment. I cannot sleep and am constantly worried about my child. This is so unfair they are allowed to play these games with our lives!
