Unemployment: Things You Can Do to Fill Your Day

Fight Unemployment Boredom

Dave Crea
Are you unemployed? Does endless hours of searching Internet websites and classifieds have you feeling down? Are you bored and feeling restless? Unemployment can cause you to feel less valuable to society, your self and your family than you really are! Here are some activities that will keep you feeling good about yourself while your hunting down that next job.

Over 9.6% of Americans who are unemployed and actively looking for work are not finding new jobs. Safe to say, it may take you many weeks or even months to find your next job. In the mean time, volunteering at a local charity can help you feel better about yourself and contribute to the maintenance of your self esteem. You will also be helping someone else.

Start a garden. Doing yard work can be a very therapeutic activity. Planting and helping things grow makes you feel better and contributes to feeling of well being. Getting your hands dirty can be a fun and rewarding activity. Gardening can also help you stay in good physical shape. Besides working in your own garden ask your neighbors and family if there is any yard work you can do for them. You will be helping them out. Moreover, this will help you feel better about yourself and put a smile on their face.

Join a writing network such as associated content or writers network.com. It doesn't matter if your not a good writer. Just get your thoughts down on paper and express yourself. Write about your last job. This will help you review your skills and keep your mind sharp. Spend some time writing about what you want from your next job. This will keep you tuned in to what is really important in your job search and help prepare you for your next interview questions.

Exercise! Walk, run or whatever you do to get exercise. If you can stay in shape while you're searching for that next employment opportunity you will be glad you kept those extra pounds off. Inactivity is one of your biggest foes while being unemployed. Being a couch potato does nothing to help you find a new job and can be a catalyst for laziness.
Did you know that moderate exercise releases chemicals in the brain that make you feel better? Try a new physical activity for variety and a new challenge. Have you wanted to learn to golf or become a bowler? Now is your chance!

Find faith! These are tough times and you're going to need something to believe in to get you through. It can be at your church or house of worship or you can read motivational books and articles. But whatever form of faith you decide to pursue it will be worth the effort.

Help your family out. You have the time and they deserve it. Remember, your unemployment affects them too. It may be causing your spouse and children extra stress and worry. They are concerned about your well being so help them with the everyday chores and take some of the load off them.

In summary keep yourself active doing worthwhile things. Help other people, yourself and your family. Try to feel good about yourself. Remember things may get worse but eventually your situation will get better. You will eventually see a light at the end of the tunnel.
