Unexpected Benefits of Weight Loss and a Better Diet

Tara M. Clapper
Since starting Weight Watchers a few weeks ago, I've lost two pounds or less each week. However, the effects on my body have been significant and positive. With only minor changes in diet and activity, I've noticed that my body runs more efficiently and improves my appearance and confidence.

With the help of Weight Watchers PointsPlus, I've learned to:

· Limit serving size

· Incorporate the foods I can't live without (chocolate, coffee) without going overboard

· Hold myself accountable

· Evaluate foods

· Expect rewards for success

Some of the benefits I've experienced have been surprising. I haven't altered my diet drastically, but the slight changes have caused weight loss.

Body's Energy Management

When I want to adapt to a cardio-intensive activity, my body is more effective at doing what I ask of it. This has happened despite the fact that my exercise is minimal. Similarly, I fall asleep much faster even though I have not altered my use of caffeine.

Whiter Teeth

Despite drinking the same amount of tea, iced tea and coffee, my teeth have become whiter. This may be a result of higher levels of calcium in my diet. I have made no changes to the type of toothpaste or toothbrush I use and have not had a cleaning since starting the diet.

If calcium is the reason for whiter teeth, I can also assume that they're stronger and more resistant to chips. This has also increased confidence in my appearance.

Mental Focus

Since improving my diet and exercise routines, I've noticed I'm able to be more focused with activities, whether working or playing sports or video games.

Positive Attitude

I am not one of those people who feels that a positive attitude is the answer to all difficult situations. However, weight loss has allowed me to hold a positive attitude as a result of my weight loss instead of simply being a catalyst for losing weight.

I know how important energy is when yoga is concerned, though I hardly go into yoga with a positive attitude. I do manage to walk out of each class with a positive outlook.
