Unexpected Pregnancy: How to Cope

Erin Rivera
While many people plan and anxiously wait to take a pregnancy test to see if it yields a positive or negative result, there are many cases where people find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy. Some people may even find themselves pregnant even though they were on birth control or practicing alternative birth control methods. While it is easy to panic and worry when one finds out they are unexpectedly pregnant, there are ways to cope. Here is a look at some tips.

1. Allow yourself time to adjust. You will likely feel a myriad of emotions ranging from being scared, nervous, anxious or even moments of deep sadness. These emotions may lead to others of excitement and happiness. Remember that all of these emotions are completely normal. Try not to feel guilty if you feel sad or upset over finding out you are pregnant. It is important to remind yourself these emotions will (eventually) pass.

2. Take your time in telling people. While many people run out and announce their pregnancy to the whole world as soon as the pregnancy test turns positive it is okay to wait till you feel more comfortable with the news yourself before telling family and friends. If you do find yourself wanting to confide in someone make sure it is someone you are comfortable with and that is trustworthy.

3. Schedule a blood test. Some women need that final verification to really let the news set in. You can contact your primary care physician or your OB doctor to get this blood test. This will give you the 100% accurate results you need to confirm you are pregnant and it will also help you get set up with your doctor.

4. Once the news has officially set in you can then make a plan. If you are concerned about work or how it will affect different aspects of your home life, make out a list of things you can do to make the transition as simple as possible. This can include cleaning out your home to make more room, working extra to take extra time off of work or even just making a list of things you will need to do before the baby comes.

5. Lastly always remember pregnancy is not a permanent situation. While nine months may seem like a long time, especially if you are in a difficult situation or you find yourself plagued with morning sickness try to keep in mind it will pass and in the end you will have a brand new person to love and be loved by.
