Unexpected Wrath

Donna Cavanagh
I did not think about what I was doing
I thought, perhaps, she needed some aid
An older woman, sitting on a curb in the heat
Was she in distress trying to find some shade?

I pulled over and asked if she was okay
I had not thought it was a risky thing to do
She looked up and told me "go to hell"
Yes, those were the words she decided to spew

At first, I thought I heard her wrong
Why would anyone be so mean?
But she said I needed to mind my business
To drive along before she made a scene

I have to admit she hurt my feelings
Hours later her reaction would make my eyes tear
She made me feel embarrassed for offering help
Her reaction was cruel and inarguably severe

I tweeted my experience and two ladies reached out
And told me she was an aberration
Some people have lost their open heart
Instead of kindness they rely on confrontation

It was so sad; her bitterness was apparent
But I could not help wonder what made her this way
How does one turn into such a dark person?
Is this her normal personality or one she wore for today?

Will this stop me from reaching out?
I might back off for a little while
I may be naïve, but I truly believe
At times we all need a helping hand or a stranger's smile

Sometimes "no good deed goes unpunished" feels true! But God sees what we do - even though it hurts, we aren't responsible for the response, only our own actions.

:( this poem makes me sad- and a sweet looking old lady of all people! That would turn my world on it's head! Its times like that where you have to be glad you have poetry to turn to :)

Don't stop reaching out, she was the exception not the rule.

Well written as always. Don't fret about the lady's attitude. God knows what was in your heart and mind just as He knows hers. Keep on being that giving person, The rewards far out weigh any downside.

Not good. Can't understand why but who knows the background of this person. Just keep on being the lovely person you are, Donna.

you were kind for reaching out, don't let a few bad apples ruin your whole bushel :) you'll got to keep your sweet heart! maybe one of these days that person will truly need a helping hand and turn their life around from your kindness...

I agree with Peter... some people cannot find it within themselves to accept another's generosity.
