Unhealthiest French Foods

A List of Five Foods to Avoid and Why

French cuisine is generally known for indulgence. Meats are popular, as are desserts and some snails (aka Escargots). The food is rich, full of flavor and, sometimes, full of fat. A nice antioxidant rich French red wine will help combat the effects of some of the foods fattiness, but you are best to avoid the following five foods, and stick with leaner meat cuts, vegetables and fruits.

We all love bread, it is a staple food for most Americans, but it is not always a healthy food. Many people are finding they have an allergy to Gluten, something that is found in wheat products. It also is full of cholesterol, the bad kind, which means it is not healthy for your insides or your outsides. The French have a lovely pastry they call a croissant. This tasty breading is eaten alone or used as a sandwich bread. It is usually a flaky pastry that is dusted in butter, which is also pretty fattening.

Meat lovers unite in French. Mutton, sausage and more. White meats are always the better choice, and opt for lean cuts. Always avoid foie gras, which is duck. This meat is very fatty. Unhealthy meats and their fats can stick inside your body for months, turning into that cottage cheese butt that you hate so much.

When it is time for desert avoid the crème brulee and the eclairs. Sure, you want authentic French cuisine, but there are much healthier dessert choices. Crème brulee is a fatty custard that is topped with caramel, yummy but artery clogging. Eclairs are divine, but they seem to add five pounds to your frame by just looking at them. This doughnut like pastry is stuffed with crème and smothered in chocolate.

Last, but surely not least, avoid the Tripe. Tripe is a "meat-like" substance made only from the first three chambers of the cow's stomach. Not only is it unhealthy for your body, it also just sounds gross, doesn't it?

Sure, French food is delicious, but you must be wise in your choices of what to eat if you are going for a healthy diet. For a better dessert alternative try the fruit tarts, and if meat is your thing opt for a dish with rabbit, turkey or chicken, which are all much healthier meat choices.
