Unhealthy Japanese Cuisine

Dining out is a fact of American life. Those most exciting ventures for dinner involve ethnic cuisines. Japanese restaurants are quickly becoming some of the most popular mealtime destinations, and this is a guide about what NOT to order in a Japanese establishment.

1. Fried rice is never the best menu choice, and this continues to be true in the Japanese version of this Asian dish. One serving of fried rice can contain up to 500 calories and 15 grams of fat. Steamed rice is a much healthier choice at 280 calories and 0 grams of fat.

2. Lo Mien noodles, common in both Japanese and Chinese dishes are an incredibly unhealthy menu choice. 400 calories, and 10 grams of fat before any other additions make this Japanese food choice one to avoid.

3. Fried shrimp is one of the least healthy Japanese food choices. The "fried" part is obvious, but the 632 calories and 37 grams of fat make this Japanese menu item off limits to those of us trying to live a healthy lifestyle.

4. Teriaki Chicken is a common unhealthy Japanese menu inclusion. This dish contains almost 500 calories per serving, in addition to 8 grams of fat, 716 mg of sodium, and 102 mg of artery clogging cholesterol.

5. The final unhealthy Japanese food item on this list comes in the form of Sukiyaki Beef. This menu item contains 650 calories, a surprising 27 grams of fat, 70 mg of cholesterol, and 694 mg of sodium.

Steamed rice, sushi, seafood, and sashimi are offered in abundance at Japanese restaurants, and these are much healthier options. Avoid anything that is fried or breaded.
