So now it's your turn, and you have been put in charge of hosting a baby shower. Maybe for your relative or BFF, but either way it's on your shoulders to make this time a success for that person. Most baby showers are predictable, due in large part to the fact that all the games played at baby showers are usually the same ol' thing. Measure moms belly, pick up cotton balls blind folded, find the safety pins in the rice and so on. Not that these are not great games, they are and quite fun too but as we get older and start attending more baby showers they become a bit repetitive. I bet you a hundred bucks that I can pick out more safety pins than you in the bowl of rice, because I have played that game so many times.
I just recently had a baby shower for myself and actually did all the hosting myself as well. Here are 5 games we played at my shower that are sure to wow and impress your guest, and everyone can participate in. They are fun and are sure to make you laugh and have a good time.
Never-say-baby: This game is played just like the "don't cross your legs" game. When your guest arrive have your door host give out safety pins or some other item that can potentially be taken from them. At my baby shower we used a yarn necklace with beads in the colors of the shower. Tell your guest that they are not allowed to say the word baby. If someone hears another person saying baby, they can take their pins or necklace. The person with the most pins or necklaces at the end of the shower will win a prize.
What's-mom-wearing? To play this game wait until all or most of your guests have arrived. After they have all been there for about 30 minutes secretly pull mom away from the party for about 10 minutes. During that time pass out paper and ask your guests to describe how mom looks. They should be writing down everything form the type of shirt and color to her make-up and hair style. Any jewelry she has on, shoes, nail polish. The person with the best detailed description of how mom looks wins a prize. This game is fun and it's amazing to see how many people really don't pay attention.
Purse Scavenger. This game was my favorite one at my baby shower. Before the shower compose a game sheet that has items such as comb, brush, pen, checkbook, drivers license, 4-$1 dollar bills, key ring with at least 4 keys, old receipt, stick of gum, piece of trash, any form of birth control, lip stick, mirror, $20 bill, baby shower invitation, and anything else you can think of that would be in a woman's purse. Give each item a point value 1, 2, 5, 10 and so on. Make sure the most common things are worth the least points and the uncommon things are higher in point value. Now here's how you play: ask your guest to grab hold of their purses, and you will read off the item starting with the most common things. Your guest will dig in their purse to find the item, give them 30 seconds to hold up the item. If they have it they get the points, if not no points. The person with the biggest purse should win! Just kidding, the person with the most points wins.
Story Teller. Have your guest get into two large teams or pairs. Give them a list of candy names such as: Big red, snickers, sugar daddy, milk duds, goobers, dum dums, butterfingers, pay day, tootsie roll, nerds, life savers, milky way, mounds, hot tamales, kisses and/or hugs, baby Ruth, etc. Have your teams create some advice for the mother and her new baby using the following candy names. They should be creative but use each candy name only one time. Team with the best story judged by mom to be wins. This game is hysterical. Here is a few sentences from one of the stories at my baby shower. Don't be like the momma who was one of the hot tamales who got mounds of hugs and kisses from her sugar daddy. He shared his big red tootsie roll and they headed down the milky way and ended up with a baby Ruth. His butterfingers touched her goobers and whatchamakalit.
See you can get quite creative.
Baby Pictionary. This is the last game I played at my baby shower. It's a bit time consuming but very fun. Make cards that have baby items or actions on them, example, diaper geanie, ultrasound, crying baby, pacifier.....
Split your guest into two teams. Have one person from each team come to the center, give them a piece of blank paper and a pencil. Show them both the card with the baby item or action on it. They then go back to their teams and draw out the item on the card. The team that guesses the item first gets a point. Then repeat the process with new team members and a new card. This game will be so much fun, and challenging. We gave a special party favor to the team that won.
I hope these games will be a hit at your next baby shower. Be sure to pass them along and break the cycle of the same ol' games.
