Unique and Creative Ways to Use Sand

More Than for Just Making Sand Castles!

Sand is great in your children's sand box and also for a sand garden. But did you know that there are so many uses you can get out of ordinary sand? Here are some unique and creative ways to use sand.

Unique and creative ways to use sand # 1: Protect your garden tools

You can use sand to help protect and store your garden tools from the harmful elements as well as keeping them clean. All you need is a five gallon bucket and some builder's sand. You can find the builder's sand in most home improvement stores or masonry supply stores. First you need to fill a five gallon bucket full of builder's sand, then pour about one quart of clean motor oil into the sand. Now you can plunge your garden tools into the sand a few times to help clean and lubricate them. You can also store your tools in a bucket of sand to help prevent them from getting rusted.

You can do the same thing with your smaller garden tools, just fill a coffee can almost full of builder's sand and some clean motor oil. Now you have the perfect space for your hand trowels and pruners.

Unique and creative ways to use sand # 2: Better traction for your car

If you live in a climate that is prone to icy road conditions, you can place sand bags in the trunk of your car to get better traction. The sand may help prevent your car from spinning out of control on the icy roads or from getting stuck. You can also use sand bags for extra traction if you have a rear-wheel drive vehicle.

Unique and creative ways to use sand # 3: Help clean a narrow-neck flower vase

Just because it's time to throw out the flowers that have been sitting in the vase since your Birthday, doesn't mean you have to throw out the vase as well. There is an easier way to clean the narrow opening to the vase; you can fill the vase with a little bit of sand and some warm soapy water. Next all you need to do is shake the vase gently to remove any residue. The sand will do all the scrubbing work for you.

Unique and creative ways to use sand # 4: A steady holder for gluing

You can fill a small container full of sand to help hold a broken item that you need to glue. Since you only have two hands, the sand can work as a third hand, and then you can use both your hands to repair the broken item. Put the heaviest part of the item you need to repair in the sand to help steady it. Make sure that you position the item in such a way that when you do glue the broken piece back, that the broken piece will be able to balance and stand on its own while it dries.

These are just some of the things that ordinary sand can do to help you with projects around the house.
