Unique Father's Day Greeting Card Messages

Juliet Cook
When it comes to greeting card messages for any holiday or special occasion, I am a fan of writing one's own unique note instead of just relying on prefabricated greeting card clichés. Sure, there are lots of amusing or poignant prefab greeting card messages to choose from these days, but a personalized message is bound to be more specific, more authentic, and more significant for both yourself and the recipient.

Father's Day is no exception. Even in the case of a father/child relationship that is not particularly demonstrative or a dad who is on the stoic side, chances are very much in your favor that your father will genuinely appreciate a unique Father's Day greeting card message that is especially catered to him.

A good idea to help get your creative juices flowing as you consider the special Father's Day message you'd like to write for your dad is to think in terms of specifics. For example, is there a specific personal experience that the two of you have shared from which the good memories continue to live on? Is there a specific nugget of advice your dad imparted to you that was especially important to you or had a more far-reaching impact than he may have realized? Is there a specific moment that you recall really bonding with your father or a specific anecdote that serves as a sort of inside joke between the two of you? What about specific character traits of your father that you particularly admire, appreciate, or enjoy? Drawing upon specific details in your Father's day greeting card message is a great way to transcend the realm of the generic and enter the realm of the more personalized and meaningful.

Another good idea is to think about your dad's personal style, sensibilities, and interests and try to incorporate some unique details related to one of those factors into his Father's Day greeting card message. For example, if your dad loves grilling out, why not include a new recipe that you think he might enjoy trying? If he's an avid fisherman, try to find an off-the wall fish story that he might find amusing . If he's a chocolate connoisseur, clue him in to an exciting new gourmet chocolate bar.

Another good idea is to incorporate some well-chosen poetry into your Father's Day greeting card. Unless your father is already a lover of poetry, this may seem like an unlikely notion, but consider this poem by Raymond Carver as just one of myriad poetic possibilities. It's not overly obvious, but offers a plainspoken yet powerful celebration of love, nature, and the beautiful flow of the interconnected.

Where Water Comes Together with Other Water

I love creeks and the music they make.
And rills, in glades and meadows, before
they have a chance to become creeks.
I may even love them best of all
for their secrecy. I almost forgot
to say something about the source!
Can anything be more wonderful than a spring?
But the big streams have my heart too.
And the places streams flow into rivers.
The open mouths of rivers where they join the sea.
The places where water comes together
with other water. Those places stand out
in my mind like holy places.
But these coastal rivers!
I love them the way some men love horses
or glamorous women. I have a thing
for this cold swift water.
Just looking at it makes my blood run
and my skin tingle. I could sit
and watch these rivers for hours.
Not one of them like any other.
I'm 45 years old today.
Would anyone believe it if I said
I was once 35?
My heart empty and sere at 35!
Five more years had to pass
before it began to flow again.
I'll take all the time I please this afternoon
before leaving my place alongside this river.
It pleases me, loving rivers.
Loving them all the way back
to their source.
Loving everything that increases me.

Um... I haven't gotten that far yet? How far in advance do you think I actually plan?
