Pittsburgh-It's known for its sports, its steel, and its beer drinking. But its food? Pittsburghers love to eat and there are many food items that are unique to the city. Here are some one of a kind foods you'll find in the city of Pittsburgh.

Primanti Brother's Sandwiches (sandwiches as big as your head): These unique sandwiches are often imitated, but never duplicated. As a popular Pittsburgh food stop, Primanti Brother's has been making colossal sandwiches for over 70 years. The sandwiches consist of meat, cheese, fresh cut fries, sweet slaw, and tomato all piled high on soft Italian bread. If you want to indulge in one iconic Pittsburgh food, this is it.

Where to find this Pittsburgh food Item: Primanti Brother's restaurants.

Pittsburgh Salad (a salad with French fries): A real Pittsburgher knows that a salad is not necessarily a "diet" food. Salads in Pittsburgh are often topped with meat, melted cheese, hard-boiled eggs, and buckets of fresh cut French-fries. Complete your salad with a side of Ranch dressing and you have yourself all the calories you need in a week.

Where to find this Pittsburgh food item: any bar in the city. Some of my favorites include Fatheads on the South Side and Redbeards in Mount Washington.

Chipped-Chopped Ham (thin shaved ham): This thin ham is produced by "chipping" the meat against the slicer. There's a lot of flavor packed into these little shavings. My favorite way to eat chipped-chopped ham is to mix it all up with some barbeque sauce and make it into a sandwich.

Where to find this Pittsburgh food item: At the deli counter of a local grocer. Ask for Isaly's chipped ham- they did it first and they do it best.

Pierogies: Sure, pierogies aren't really a "Pittsburgh Food". They are an Eastern European food. But Pittsburgh has adopted these lovely dumplings as its own, thanks to Slavic-American Pittsburgh communities.

Where to find this Pittsburgh food item: Church Brew Works, Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, PNC Park (where you can also check out the semi-famous pierogi races during the Pirate games).

So go ahead and eat like a local. Your mouth will thank you.
