Who doesn't love French fries? Their salty, crunch goes great with hamburgers, country fried steak or even a frosty milkshake. However, some people like to shake things up a bit and top their fries with some pretty strange concoctions. If you're a French fry purist, you may want to turn your head, because these toppings are far from original.
Fresh Garlic
Leave it to the garlic capital of the world to come up with this spicy topping. In Gilroy, California you'll find a French fry topping that will leave you quite smelly. Gilroy, California is home to the Gilroy Garic Festival, in which you'll find everything (even ice cream) loaded with garlic. French fries are no exception. Festival goers can munch on fries covered in fresh minced garlic, salt and fresh parsley. If you love garlic, you should definitely try this out at home '" just make sure everyone else in the house has a few or you may be sleeping on the porch.
Gravy
The exact origins of gravy as a French fry topper are unknown. While some claim the Midwest had a hand in this tasty dish, others claim the birthplace to be Canada. Either way, this is certainly a dish that will warm you up on a cold winter's day '" which they happen to have plenty of in both places. While it may sound strange, gravy topped French fries are actually quite delicious. If you like gravy on your mashed potatoes, chances are you'll also like it on your French fries.
Mayonnaise
Ah, bless the Belgians. Not only do they make some of the best chocolate in the world, and waffles that are to die for, but they put mayonnaise on their French fries. I know it may sound a bit strange, but this is something you have to try. The rich, creamy taste of the mayonnaise pairs perfectly with the salty crunch of the fries. For more flavor, try using flavored mayonnaise. Whatever you do though, skip the fat-free and low-fat mayo. You're eating French fries for goodness sakes. Low-fat mayonnaise will not make the dish healthy so go whole hog.
Pulled Pork Barbecue
Now, I'm not certain that I was the first person to think up this delicious concoction, but this is something you have to try if you love pulled pork. I like to take seasoned French fries and top them with saucy, pulled pork barbecue and shredded cheddar cheese. I then pop the plate in the microwave just until the cheese melts and enjoy. It's a complete meal, but also makes excellent game-day food.
