Unique Handmade Father's Day Gifts: Recycled Necktie T.V. Remote Holder

"Tie" One on for Dad with These DIY Father's Day Crafts

Angela W. La Fon
Are you looking for a unique DIY Father's Day gift? Dad may "knot" really want a new necktie for Father's Day but a recycled necktie craft can be just the accessory dad needs. Ask dad to cull out his least favorite neckties for a worthy cause and don't be offended if they happen to be Father's Day gifts from years past. After all, they are going to be put to good use and dad will be able to show them off without tying one on. If you want to bypass dad's collection of ties, support your Good Will store or local charity resale store where you'll find just the tie you need for these handmade Father's Day gifts.

Recycled Necktie Crafts: Remote Control Holder

Where's the remote?

Right after peace and quiet and the last piece of pie, one of the things dads look for most is often the television remote control. This is an easy Father's Day craft that is both practical and fanciful.

Materials:

1 old necktie

Sewing machine OR fabric glue OR hot glue gun

Directions:

The beauty of this Father's Day craft is that you have options. If you have a sewing machine and you can make straight lines about four inches long then this will be "sew" easy. If not, fabric glue and plenty time of time to dry is all you need to "tie" up this Father's Day gift. You can also "shoot" it together with hot glue gun just be sure to use a line of small dots so that the hot glue doesn't come through the to the front of the fabric. I am a big fan of Stitch Witchery but many neckties are made from materials that are not ideal for applying a hot iron so scratch that idea this time.

Turn the tie upside down and fold the end upwards, about four inches, so that the bottom front of the tie is now showing front facing but upside down. Secure the two sides with your preferred method.

That's all that is needed because the remainder of the tie will be tucked under the seat cushion of dad's favorite television viewing chair or end of the sofa and the remote control hanger will hang over the edge within perfect reach for dad.

You can use this same technique to make a variety of other DIY Father's Day gifts. By simply cutting above the holder, folding under and securing the top edge, you can use peel and stick Velcro tabs to make dad cool recycled necktie crafts that hold Dad's pen collection, his eye glasses, iPod, cell phone or his favorite snacks.
