Unique Holiday Events at the Milwaukee Public Museum

The Milwaukee Public Museum in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has kicked off the holidays with the annual tradition of the Lighting of the Whale on the Friday after Thanksgiving. The unique display of the illuminated skeleton of a massive humpback whale is just one of the reasons for the family to visit the museum over the Christmas season. Everyone knows that visiting the museum is educational for kids and adults, but it is also fun, especially over the holidays.

Special holiday events at the Milwaukee Public Museum over the Holidays include the Lighting of the Whale, The Polar Express: IMAX Experience, The Mystery of the Christmas Star, European Village Holidays and the storytelling event of the Christmas Tree Ship Story.

Lighting of the Whale

The illuminated humpback whale skeleton that hangs over the Grand Staircase is an unusual Milaukee tradition. Viewing of the lighted whale is included with general admission.

The Polar Express

The Polar Express, the fanciful movie starring Tom Hanks, has become a holiday favorite for families. The conductors calls 'All Aboard,' and a young doubter goes on a magical trip to the North Pole to see Santa Claus on a steam train that chugs through the countryside. The Polar Express: The IMAX Experience, runs from November 27, 2009 through January 3, 2010. Tickets are $10 for adults and $9 for children/teens/students/seniors.

Mystery of the Christmas Star

Travel back in time 2000 years to the ancient city of Bethlehem, when the Wise Men fooled the Star of Bethlehem to the Christ Child. The study investigates what the sky might have looked like 200 years ago and what caused the Wise Men to cross the desert of find the infant Jesus, in a stable with Mary and Joseph. The Mystery of the Christmas Star runs from November 27, 2009 through January 3, 2010.

European Village

On December 4-5, 2009, holiday are demonstrated in the European Village, with docents talking about European traditions at Christmastime. This is an opportunity for the family to make traditional holiday crafts, see colorful costumes and learn about European traditions.

The Christmas Tree Ship Story

A special storytelling event, held on December 4, 2009, tells the story of the Christmas Tree Ship. The Rouse Simmons was a ship loaded with over 5,000 Christmas Tress that sank during a winter storm near Two River, Wisconsin. The storytelling is free with museum admission.

General admission tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors/students/teens and $8 for children (3-12). Admission for children under three is free. Tickets can be purchased online with an additional $5 fee.
