Unique Holiday Gifts for Teachers

Angela Tague
As students learn about the holiday season, it's natural for them to enjoy treating their teachers to a small gift. Whether store bought or handmade, a token of appreciation will get noticed. A gift lets the teacher know that both the student--and his guardians--appreciate the educator's care and commitment to the child.

Food Gifts
If the classic "apple for the teacher" gift seems old fashioned, surprise the teacher with a gourmet treat. Hand-dipped chocolates, cinnamon flavored roasted nuts and uncommon candy creations from a local sweet shop all transport easily in a child's book bag during the cool winter months. Attaching a note of thanks lets the teacher know how much both the child and parent appreciate the teacher's skills, according to The National Education Association.

Gift Cards
Most children know a few of their teacher's favorite pastimes. Giving a gift card lets the teacher indulge in their hobbies such as reading, making crafts or completing home improvement projects. When in doubt, a gift card to a restaurant appeals to the majority of teachers, advises the The George Lucas Educational Foundation website, Edutopia.

Clothing Items
For a teacher watching his or her waistline, avoid food items and present an indulgent piece of winter wear to make the educator smile. Warm, knit cashmere gloves or a thick, insulated scarf will keep the teacher warm through the cold days of the holiday season. If you live south of the Equator and the holiday season brings warm temperatures, consider a light silk scarf for the ladies or a school-mascot laden tie for a male teacher.

Classroom Gift
Any gift that makes the teacher's job easier and more pleasant will gain admiration. An educational software game to use with the students, set of reference books or classroom appropriate educational supplies work well as a gift. Ideas include stationary, arts and crafts supplies and tablets of stickers used when grading papers. A trip to the local teacher supply store provides many ideas.

Homemade Items
Some children love to express themselves with creative words or through crafts. Any teacher would treasure a specially hand drawn picture on holiday paper, a hand painted holiday ornament or a plate of cookies specially decorated by the student. According to Edutopia, a heartfelt thank you note ranks among the favorite gifts of teachers. This gift is long lasting, doesn't contain any calories and always expresses genuine sentiments.
