Unique Home Decorating with Frames

Anni Sofferet
Unlike old-fashioned decorating that relegates picture frames to the peripheries of art, home decorating with frames makes use of these beautiful borders to create three-dimensional art on the wall. Any old frame will do, and inside it you can display beautiful objects. Here are ideas for things you might choose to place inside your empty frames and ways to refinish the frames for a matching look. So take out your old picture frames, hang them on the wall and start decorating your home with frames.

Home Decorating with Frames and China

If you have beautiful china plates that you would love to use for home decorating hang them on the wall with metal plate holders. Then refinish your empty picture frame with crackled-paint from Rust Oluem. This will create a shabby chic look that will go well with country decor.

Home Decorating with Frames and Lace

If you love lace, buy a few cheap white napkins and hem lace along their edges. Then slip the napkins through small silver napkin holders or glass beads and hang them on the wall. Paint your empty picture frame in dark purple. Once dry, paint it again in white. Wait for the paint to dry again, then sand the frame along the edges to reveal the purple hue here and there.

Home Decorating with Frames and Dry Flowers

Save your wilting roses by hanging them upside down in a dark closet. Within three weeks, the roses will dry. Hang them on a silk ribbon from your wall, then frame them. Paint the frame in a color that matches the roses. Then dilute white paint with water and smear this cloudy veneer over the painted frame.

Home Decorating with Frames and Silverware

Buy one foot of lighting metal chain at your home improvement store. Hang it horizontally from your wall in a drooping fashion. Slip large elegant silverware through the chain loops. Use a large stapler to secure the heavy silverware heads and keep them from drooping. Then paint your empty frame in white. Once dry spray paint the frame in silver. Once dry again, sand the silver away in places to distress the frame finish and expose some of the white paint.

Home Decorating with Frames and Sea Shells

If you live by the seaside, collect beautiful shells on the beach; otherwise, buy large seashells. Install hooks on the wall to hang your seashells. Then paint your empty picture frame in white. Finally, glue small seashells in clusters at the corners of the frame, before you hang it on the wall to frame your seashell display.
