An Easy and Impressive Budget Option

A bare living room is a blank canvas, and it should be illuminated in ways that enhance the desired style while providing adequate lighting for reading and more. A contemporary space can be illuminated in unique ways that go far beyond floor lamps and track lighting. The options are only limited by creativity and the courage to try something new. Consider my unique contemporary lighting ideas for the living room, and illuminate one of the most popular areas of the home with one-of-a-kind modern style. It is not necessary to spend hundreds of dollars to add drama and beauty with lighting.

Easy Indirect Contemporary Lighting

My former home was decorated with contemporary artwork and furnishings, but the living room was dark since it was located on the south side of the home. However, I did not want to invest in expensive professionally-installed ceiling fixtures since I did not plan on staying in the home. What I wanted was overhead lighting to add ambiance and visual appeal. I came up with a unique contemporary lighting option that was easy on the wallet and even easier to install. I used new aluminum gutters and rope lighting to create indirect amazing indirect lighting around the ceiling of my contemporary living room.

I began by purchasing gutters that were cut to fit the length of my living room. I also bought white rope lighting to span the length of the gutters. I painted the gutters to match the color of the living room walls, and I securely hung them on the drywall about fourteen inches from the ceiling using small wood screws. Next, I placed the rope lighting inside the gutters and hid the cord behind a contemporary screen.

The gutters no longer looked like something designed to catch and direct water on the exterior of the home. They did not look like gutters at all. They became an architectural element and a contemporary lighting option that looked much more expensive than it really was. I also changed the color of the rope lights. Besides white I used amber and blue, and it looked absolutely stunning when all of the other lights in the living room were off.

How I Came Up With This Contemporary Type of Illumination

I came up with this unique contemporary living room lighting option at a wedding reception. The venue used this type of indirect illumination along with faux vines to conceal the gutters. I did not want faux vines in my contemporary living room. Painting the guttering to match the walls gave them a unique built-in appearance, and camouflage of any type was not necessary.
