She'll be taken in by the romance of it all, throughout the whole evening. You have a few choices at the end for the proposal. You can either surprise her right away or do it with a twist. Choose which one would mean the most to your lover.
The Scavenger Hunt
Keep it simple so she does not get lost or frustrated. Tailor the clues to where you live and how much she knows her way around the area. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Lay out her favorite dress outfit on the bed. Lay a greeting card on top telling her how much you love her and instructing her to get dressed and follow the rose petals. Sprinkle rose petals down the stairs and into the kitchen.
Put her favorite chocolates, or other sweet treats, on the counter in the kitchen. Attach a note that simply has the address of the local wine and spirit's store. Have a gift basket of her favorite wine or champagne, complete with glasses for two, paid for and waiting on the counter for her.
Instruct the clerk to give her another note with a clue about a special place of of yours together that she should go to next. It could be the restaurant that you had your first date at or a favorite local park or beach.
The Engagement Evening
Everyone has different ideas of what is truly romantic when getting engaged. Mix and match these ideas according to the rules of the place you are going to propose with a scavenger hunt at, as well as your girlfriend's personality.
Start by laying a trail of rose petals from the parking area if it is at a local beach or other nature spot. If you chose a restaurant or other establishment, have someone watching for her to drive in so you can be ready.
Proposal Option 1 (A Gala Affair): Have all of your friends and family waiting for an engagement party, surrounding you from view. As she enters the area, drop to one knee and have a band start playing your favorite couple song softly in the background.
Proposal Option 2 (A Private Affair): Be waiting alone for her when she arrives. If it is at a beach or park, bring a picnic and a blanket to spread out on. Don't forget to bring romantic music with you. Wait for the sun to set before asking her to marry you.
Proposal Option 3 (With a Twist): As evening nears, take a jewelry box out of your pocket and give it to her. Inside she'll find a beautiful pendant necklace. As she turns around to have you put it around her neck, tell her to read the inscription on the back. Have the date inscribed saying something like "This is the day that I asked you to be my wife." or "This is the day that I became the luckiest man alive." Be on one knee and ready with the ring when she turns around.
Hopefully these ideas have inspired you to plan a unique way of asking your girlfriend to marry you. This is a once in a lifetime memory that you will be creating. Take these suggestions and make them your own when proposing with a scavenger hunt.
