When people shop for woven baskets, they do not usually see anything beyond the available options on store shelves. Some are lined, and others are painted, but they are rarely unique. Many people do not realize that plain woven baskets can be spray painted in any available color. It is also possible to decorate the handles, sides and edges in unique and creative new ways.
Plain Woven Baskets Can Be Spray Painted
I had not thought about spray painting plain woven baskets until visiting Bailey's Discount Center in Toto, Indiana. They have several shelves filled with plain woven baskets, and an associate used a spray painted basket in one of their shelf displays. Their example was absolutely beautiful. It was roughly spray painted in three bright colors, but it was far more unique than anything I had ever seen. It was just a sample designed to inspire shoppers to buy baskets, but it would have been perfect for my daughter's bedroom. Seeing the painted basket sparked many more creative ideas.
Decorate Plain Woven Baskets with Craft Buttons
I love craft buttons. They are available in major craft stores as well as online, and they are available in many subjects from frogs to quilted hearts. I would love to decorate a basket to hold my sewing supplies. I would decorate the sides with cat themed buttons, and I would tie a raffia bow to the base of one side of the handle. I plan to decorate a plain woven basket in a cat theme in the very near future.
Use Faux Flowers to Decorate Plain Woven Baskets
If I were going to decorate a plain woven basket to use as a centerpiece on my dining room table I would spray paint it light sky blue. I would use sprigs of small faux flowers and foliage to decorate the sides of the handle. I would decorate the edges with dried moss, and I would fill it with bundles of beautiful faux flowers or dried fragrant herbs. I love forget-me-nots, and they are lovely when combined with dried baby's breath or white statice flowers.
These are just some of the countless ways to decorate plain woven baskets. Think of the colors and themes that you prefer, and visit a local craft store for related supplies. Do not be afraid to use spray paint, and decorate the rims, handles and sides in unique new ways. They will decorate your home beautifully, and they can serve valuable purposes in and around the home.
