Unique Wedding Program Ideas

Untraditional Touches for Your Wedding

Angela Tague
Preparing for a wedding includes many stationary related tasks. Coordinating invitations with thank you notes, addressing envelopes correctly and creating wedding programs are just a few items that make their way to the ultimate To Do list. Wedding programs are distributed to guests as they arrive for the wedding ceremony. They may also be placed on seats awaiting arrival of the guests. Usually printed on embellished paper to coordinate with the wedding invitations, the program introduces guests to the members of the bridal party, details the course of events and highlights plans for the wedding reception. Although the use of a wedding program is traditional, some couples are finding new and innovative ways to let their guest know these details with non-traditional programs.

Summer Weddings
Couples planning for nuptials at an outdoor location during the summer have to be aware of weather conditions. Hot and humid conditions make for an unpleasant ceremony, unless preparations have been made to accommodate the guests. As each guest arrives, a chilled bottle of water with a special wedding program label can be distributed. On the front of the label the text can welcome guests, while the back lists the order of ceremonial events.

Another unconventional warm weather wedding program is the fan. Custom printed paper fans can be distributed by ushers as guests arrive. While they can be used to provide a cool breeze, they can also be printed with traditional wedding program details. The non-traditional wedding program also serves as a wedding favor if embellished with ribbons and decorative printed motifs.

Fall Weddings
Wedding program details can be printed on colorful paper, then cut into the shapes of fall leaves. Thread a few cascading leaves together with a piece of ribbon for an unconventional wedding program that fits the spirit of the season. Choose dark red, orange, gold and brown paper for the project. Use ribbon that coordinates with the wedding colors and the season. When in doubt, white is always a good choice.

Spring Weddings
Warm weather weddings are often accentuated with blooms of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. Spring couples may choose to plant miniature pots of these plants with a special wedding program tucked neatly inside the blooms. A program printed on decorative floral paper can be held in place with a floral card holder or by the tines of a silver plastic fork nestled into the soil. The unique wedding program holders become beautiful wedding favors that guest can enjoy all spring.

Winter Weddings
Tucked amid the holiday season, winter weddings are special. Winter couples can easily play off the holiday season when preparing non-traditional wedding programs. Consider purchasing small boxes of chocolates and caramels. Wrap each box in elegant metallic holiday gift wrap. Attach a custom printed wedding program to the top of the box with a small piece of ribbon. As the guest follows the program, they can enjoy a small treat. Children love this option!

Whether a traditional or unconventional wedding program is chosen, make sure it reflects the personality of the couple. The simple personal touches added to a wedding will be remembered and cherished for years to come.
