Unisom Sleep Gels Personal Review

Esper_D
Here's my personal review of Unisom Sleep Gels:

Description:

Unisom Sleep Gels are liquid pills in capsule form that are sold over the counter for trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Each capsule contains 50 mg of Diphenhydramine, which is a nighttime sleep aid. Do not use with alcoholic drinks or with children under 12 years old. A regular dose is one capsule and should only be used for occasional sleepiness. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before use.

Pros:

These pills are very strong if you are new to sleeping pills. Since they are in liquid form, they hit your system even faster than regular pills. Within thirty minutes I was very drowsy and just wanted to crawl under the covers and stay asleep for 10 hours! With the Unisom Sleep Gels I was able to remain asleep for a full eight hours. It was nice to experience a deep, REM, undisturbed sleep.

Cons:

Although I enjoy the deep sleep I get from Unisom Sleep Gels, I do not like the mornings after. I always wake up drowsy and in need of an additional 2 hours of sleep, even if I've had a full night's rest. I would prefer to cut the pill in half the night before and only consume half, however, since it is in gel form, this is not possible. If you do choose to use Unisom Sleep Gels, be sure you get at least 8 or more hours of sleep or it is very possible you will wake up very sleepy and unable to get through the day.

Alternative:

Wal-Mart sells a version of Unisom in the Equate brand that is not in gel form. The recommended dose is two pills. I actually only have ½ of one of those pills and fall asleep soundly within an hour and wake up rested and ready to go in the morning. The equate version sells for $2/box while the Unisom Sleep Gels sell for $5/box.

Recommendation:

If you do choose to go with the Unisom Gel Tabs, be sure you can devote a full night's rest before doing so. If available, purchase either the Unisom Sleep Tabs or the Equate Sleeping Pills that also contain Diphenhydramine as well. If you aren't used to using sleeping pills, try taking half of the sleeping tab instead for your first time. This way you can get an adequate and deep sleep, but still wake up refreshed in the morning as well.
