United Nations Debates Rights of Mother Earth

Tracie Walker
Whatever your stand on environmental issues, do you really want the United Nations legislating your personal obligations to what they call Mother Earth? The rights of Mother Earth are being debated all day today in the UN, as Bolivia's President attempts to impose his Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth on the rest of the world.

The United Nations, which apparently does not have enough to do, has agreed to spend a whole day debating whether "Mother Earth" has the same rights as humans. Bolivia's President Evo Morales, who has already gotten the World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth (which he himself assembled), to adopt a declaration giving the earth equal or superior rights over humans, has submitted Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth to the UN, and bizarrely is being taken seriously, mostly by socialist governments hoping to force capitalist countries to take the blame for climate change.

Bolivia's Declaration follows Ecuador's rewritten constitution, which is basically a religious doctrine. Based on the indigenous people's worship of Pachamama, which is loosely translated Mother Earth, the document gives unprecedented authority for "every person, people, community or nationality" to "demand the recognition of rights for nature before the public organisms." The Bolivian Declaration, submitted to the UN so that all countries would be bound by it, further states that "Human beings, all States, and all public and private institutions must: (c) promote and participate in learning, analysis, interpretation and communication about how to live in harmony with Mother Earth in accordance with this Declaration; ...(g) guarantee that the damages caused by human violations of the inherent rights recognized in this Declaration are rectified and that those responsible are held accountable for restoring the integrity and health of Mother Earth;... and (j) guarantee peace and eliminate nuclear, chemical and biological weapons;" among other things. The full document can be read here.

While some claim that the U.S. is trying to retain "its grip on the resources of the world and its perceived ability to vanquish Indigenous Peoples from their homelands," (2) the U.S. and other Western governments that are supportive of sustainable development "see the upcoming event, 'Harmony with Nature,' as political grandstanding -- an attempt to blame environmental degradation and climate change on capitalism." (3)

Obviously (presumably?) the earth itself will not be capable of claiming grievances before the ombudsman established by the "Ministry of Mother Earth" to hear them, so, says D. Christian Moore in his article in Examiner, "complaints would be voiced by activists, other groups and states on the earth's behalf." (4). Now just tell me this. If the United Nations (UN) passes Bolivia's proposed treaty titled "Declaration of Rights of Mother Earth, who do you think the complaints, demanding reparations, will be voiced against?
