United States: Nuclear Posture Review

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Sunny Peter
News reports in the New York Times suggested that President Obama is making final decisions on a broad new nuclear strategy for the United States. Given this temperament, reports suggest that he will permanently reduce America's arsenal by thousands of weapons. However, logically so, the administration has rejected a proposals stating that the United States declare that it would never be the first to use nuclear weapons.

The delay in the release of the document demonstrates the extensive thought process and debate being carried on at the background. It is known, from media reports that President Obama is seeking to cut the nuclear arsenal substantially. A move such as this would definitely provide the much needs moral force for the nuclear non-proliferation mast that the United States has been seeking to uphold. However, critics of the approach argue, that the time is not right for the United States to undertake any radical cut downs.

Important Question in the Nuclear Posture Review
One of the most important questions before President Obama is the streamline the possibilities under which the United States would resort to the first use of nuclear weapons. Experts believe that this was the primary aspects of nuclear deterrent during the cold war. Though the American President in the most noblest of thoughts may desire the elimination of nuclear weapons around the world and would seek to demonstrate constructive steps being first by the United Sates themselves. Contenders to the thought process believe that the desire of the President is "naïve and dangerous". Even though the Soviet threat is no more present the fact remains that nuclear weapons continue to pose a grave threat to world peace today. New countries are getting armed with nuclear weapons. To add to it is the fear that, nuclear weapons falling into the hands of terror groups are an increasing possibility today rather than it ever was. However, it needs to be pointed out that having nuclear capability is no deterrent for non-state actors or terror groups who may lay their hands of nuclear weapons and actually use them.

Tough Choices for President Obama
It is indeed a tough choice for the President, something like being caught between the devil and the deed blue sea. The Noble Laureate President will definitely do his greatest service to humanity if he is able to take constructive steps which help protect the world from the risk of nuclear weapons in the hands of non-state actors.
