I recently stopped in the town of Unity, Maine while on the way to another town. It is relatively small, but has a variety of stores and restaurants, as well as a college, a bed & breakfast, a fairly large park, and other establishments.

SHOPPING: Unity offers a fairly good variety of shopping, including a grocery store (McCormick's IGA; has an agency liquor store), the Crosstrax Deli (near the railroad tracks; offers coffee, soup, sandwiches, salads, see crosstrax948food.com), Unity Variety & Video (has gas pumps and tire air pump, offers groceries, deli, soda, coffee; open seven days/week), AAA Cellular Outlet, Mac's True Value Hardware, a pharmacy (next to the IGA), a thrift shop, another convenience store (on rt. 220), a flower shop, and an auto service/parts store (across from Unity Variety & Video).

DINING: Restaurants and other dining establishments in Unity, Maine include the Main Street Cafe & Bar, the House of Pizza, the Homestead Restaurant, and the China Jade (near the grocery store; eat-in and take-out). According to unitymaine.org, the Homestead and the House of Pizza are both open seven days/week, and the House of Pizza also offers calzones, sandwiches, and burgers.

COLLEGE: Unity College, an environmental college founded in 1965, has a number of buildings on its campus, some of which look rather new. According to the college website, it is a small private college with just over 500 students. There is a bookstore, dining hall, student housing, art gallery, greenhouse, and other facilities. Multiple speed bumps are located on the roads around the campus. For more information, see their website at unity.edu.

RECREATION: There is a park called Field of Dreams, which features a playground, beach, baseball field, walking track, and basketball court with two hoops. There is also a public boat access, next to the railroad track on Kanokolus Road. It has picnic tables and an outhouse. The Common Ground Country Fair is held in Unity, Maine as well. Not too distant from this town (about 25 miles according to mapquest.com), the Swan Lake State Park in Swanville, Maine features a beach, picnic tables, a playground, and other facilities.

LODGING: The Copper Heron Bed and Breakfast (copperheron.com) is open the entire year, offers four guest rooms, a spacious dining room, and private bathrooms. As indicated by their website, rates (starting at $85/night) vary depending upon the number of room occupants, number of nights, and the time of year. Cottages are also available for rent in Unity.

OTHER: Additional establishments in Unity, Maine include Down East Credit Union (has 24-hour ATM), a community center (has a gym and fitness center), Unity Massage Therapy, Clifford Commons (includes the post office, Bangor Savings Bank, and other offices), Unity Centre for the Performing Arts, a car race track (Unity Raceway, unityraceway.net), a DJ service, a cemetary (on Kanokolus Rd.), a railroad station (belfastrailroad.com), the town office, a self storage facility, at least two real estate agent offices, and the Unity Telephone Company.
