University / College Review: Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA

I attended Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA from 2003 - 2005 as a transfer and commuter student. Lynchburg College (LC for short) has a beautiful campus. Sometimes, I would sit on the steps of one of the buildings and just look out over the campus.

There are a couple of places to eat on campus. If you like busy cafeteria-style eating then the dining hall is certainly for you. They have a buffet and most everyone eats in the dining hall. However, there is also Westover, where you can order fast food items and eat quietly while watching television. It's also conveniently located near the bookstore.

2) Faculty and staff

All of the teachers that I had and met at LC were very friendly. Many of the teachers encouraged the students to come to their office for help. This individual attention isn't as possible with a large school. Since the school isn't very big, though, the teachers tend to be very gossipy.

To say that the staff at LC is great doesn't begin to cover it. Any time I ever had a problem, the people in admissions, the deans, the security officers, even some of the personal secretaries were willing to go out of their way to help. It really meant a lot that everyone cared so much.

3) Ease of transferring credits and Lynchburg College's classes

Lynchburg College has a transfer agreement with the local community college. Transferring to Lynchburg College is a smooth and easy process. Everyone that I have known who transferred to there graduated in two years. This is really good because at some schools, it takes transfer students longer than a total of four years to finish a four year degree.

I enjoyed every class that I took at Lynchburg College. I really felt like I was learning something, but having fun at the same time. At some schools, if you take a class that is similar to another class, such as both being business, the subject matter tends to repeat. At LC, if there was some repeating, it was presented in a different way. The tests and assignments weren't overly easy or overly hard either. I felt challenged and I enjoyed that. The class sizes are usually a decent size. I never heard of even any freshman classes that had a size over thirty students. Some of the upper level classes have as few as ten or fifteen students.

4) Parking

Parking on college campuses tends to be a hot topic. At Lynchburg College, I never heard anyone complain about the parking. This was probably because the parking is close to the buildings. Not only is it close, but there isn't any stairs or uphill walking either. The parking fee is also reasonable compared to what some colleges charge.

One of the unique things about LC is that there isn't a lot of walking since the main buildings form a circle. There are some outlaying buildings, but they aren't a far walk either. This is great in the winter when it's really cold outside.

5) The library and computer labs

Lynchburg College has a nice, clean, quiet library to study in and do research. The library staff is always willing to help and they process those interlibrary loan requests fast. This really helps when you have waited until the last minute to start on a research project.

There are computer labs all over the campus for the students to use. It's really convenient if you're on one side of the campus and need a computer right away to print something for class.
