Whether it's hanging out on the 50-yard line at Georgia's renowned Sanford Stadium or perching on a block of ice (for relief from the blazing Georgia sun), the white English bulldog mascot is a familiar and beloved sight at college football games.
UGA VIII, the most recent Georgia Bulldog mascot, died Friday after suffering from lymphoma. The dog was 17 months old.
Background:
In 1956 the first English bulldog became the University of Georgia mascot. He was given the nickname of UGA - for the University of Georgia. Since that time, all of the college football team's mascots have been descendants of the original UGA dog.
The human companions for the University of Georgia's English bulldog mascots are the Frank W. Seiler family of Savannah, Georgia. The Seiler's have been providing love and care for the line of mascot dogs for over 50 years.
Tenure:
UGA VIII's half brother Russ was interim mascot for the 2009 and beginning 2010 college football season. UGA VIII (aka Big Bad Bruce) took over last season for Russ.
His debut as the Georgia Bulldog mascot was Georgia's October 16th game against Vanderbilt. UGA VIII was only able to serve as the team's mascot for the final six games of the regular college football season before he was diagnosed with lymphoma.
Russ will retake his position as the college football team's mascot for the start of the 2012 season.
