The truth: we have been and are being exploited by the food industry. Take a moment and really think about that sentence. "Food industry". Not "agriculture". "Food industry." The area of the country being used for agriculture is shrinking rapidly. More and more of the food we eat is genetically engineered and comes not from farmlands, but from processing plants.
This may sound like some Orwellian nightmare. It may be far worse, even, than that. At least Victory Coffee didn't cause cancer.
The ingredients on the side of the package you buy may not even be everything in the product. Many times, new compounds are formed from the chemicals already in the food, once exposed to the high levels of heat or other chemicals that are so often used to treat the foods we buy. There are often solvents, pesticides, and other chemicals present, and they are never, ever listed. The FDA does not require it to be listed, and likely never will.
The National Uniformity for Food Act, now in discussion by Congress, would actually make it illegal for states to require food companies to list warnings on foods that contain carcinogens or suspected carcinogens.
Why would they want to do this? What are they so afraid of?
If carcinogen warnings were required, more people would be aware of the following:
Monosodium glutamate, commonly known as MSG, is added to thousands upon thousands of products as a flavor enhancer. It messes up the endocrine system, particularly altering leptin levels. Leptin is the chemical that tells your brain to tell you to stop eating, because you've got what you need.
MSG is hidden in foods under a wide and surprising variety of epithets; yeast extract, torula yeast, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, autolyzed yeast, and more.
Aspartame, a widely used chemical sweetener, is used on countless "diet" or "sugar free" products.
When aspartame is exposed to moderately high temperatures (such as those it will encounter in your body once you eat it), it breaks down into a wide variety of dangerous chemicals--formaldehyde and formic acid being among them.
Formaldehyde is a very powerful neurotoxin, and damages the eyes, brain, and other sensory glands--the entire nervous system, and then some.
Aspartame has been linked to blurred vision and countless other nervous system problems.
It has recently come to light that many of the plastics used to package food seep into the food product itself. Chemicals such as bisphenol A have been shown to promote cancers and the development of breast tissue in men.
Do you really think you can continue to trust the people that continue to allow this to happen?
