Unlikely Plot Twists for "Grey's Anatomy" Season 7

Lori May
"Grey's Anatomy" Season 7 has been full of plot twists, unexpected story lines and plenty of relationship turmoil for all the characters at Seattle Grace. With the explosive Season 6 finale, many fans questioned whether or not the "Grey's Anatomy" writers could maintain such a high level of shock value and suspense. Season 7 has focused on the repercussions and aftermath following the shooting spree at the end of last season, but plenty of attention has been given to the complex, interpersonal relationships which make "Grey's Anatomy" come to life.

The following unlikely plot twists will probably not be seen during "Grey's Anatomy" Season 7, but given some of the foreshadowing and off-hand comments made by characters and cast members alike these scenarios don't seem that unlikely-and they certainly would be surprising!

Unlikely Plot Twist: Meredith and Derek actually have a baby.

"Grey's Anatomy" Season 7 has frequently revisited one of the most common questions among fans: Will Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) ever have a baby? Their turbulent relationship has been in the spotlight of the medical drama since the opening scene of the pilot, full of ups and downs-but with the pair finally on the road to happiness, will the stork follow? According to Natalie Abrams, Ellen Pompeo told TVGuide: "Hopefully we'll explore things that real couples go through with the decision to have a child, balancing the child with work and careers, and whose career is more important; however that goes." Unfortunately, Meredith and Derek are the poster-children for "If it can go wrong, it will," making the odds of the TV couple ever conceiving-and delivering-a youngster highly unlikely, especially during the traumatic road to recovery following the Season 6 finale.

Unlikely Plot Twist: Mark gets Callie pregnant.

Mark (Eric Dane) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) have an unusual friendship, to say the least. Formerly lovers, the pair has moved into a committed but awkward state of platonic friendship-especially with Callie's relationship with Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), and Mark's enduring love for Lexie (Chyler Leigh). With Callie and Arizona's announcing their relocation to Africa, which you can read about in this article, any cross-over romance seems even more unlikely. However, an intense but temporary break-up between the ladies leading to Callie once more finding comfort in Mark's arms-and bed-which thus results in a pregnancy would certainly be a plot twist full of drama. Callie's desire for a child has been a source of conflict for her and Arizona for two seasons; Mark's own desire for a baby came to light when he attempted to adopt his daughter's unwanted child during season 6. An accidental pregnancy between the two-who are both in love with someone else-would certainly cause some on-screen fireworks.

Unlikely Plot Twist: Alex or Avery comes out of the closet.

Alex (Justin Chambers) has proven his preoccupation with the female gender in previous seasons, sleeping with several main cast ladies and by marrying Izzie (Katherine Heigl) while she was struggling to overcome cancer. Now that Katherine has left the "Grey's Anatomy" cast, Alex has become a serial bachelor and sometimes-lover to Lexie. In the wake of the Season 6 finale, he could realize that gentlemen were turning his head-too far fetched? Perhaps, but it would shock viewers. Avery (Jesse Williams) joined the Seattle Grace staff during the Mercy West merger, and despite being very attractive-he even tried to use his good looks to win surgery time during a Season 7 episode-he has only shown mild interest in Cristina (Sandra Oh). ABC and "Grey's Anatomy" have been very cutting-edge regarding all lifestyles, orientations and religious beliefs slowly being featured on the show; yet, even with two lesbians, "Grey's Anatomy" has no male resident or attending who happens to be gay. Now, Avery as a transgendered woman would be an even more surprising twist...
