Unranked Purdue Beats 7th Ranked Ohio State 26-18
Despite Losing Their Last Five Games, Purdue Pulls Big Upset
The Purdue drive resulted in a field goal. Score 3-0 Purdue.
On the next Ohio State drive, Brandon Saine made a very nice 20 yard run. Next, Saine gained 40 yards to the Purdue 6 yard line on a very fine pass from Pryor. Pryor carried it in for the touchdown. After the extra point by Pettrey, score 7-3 Ohio State. This was the score at the end of the 1st quarter.
On the first Purdue drive in the 2nd quarter, the Buckeyes forced the Boilermakers to punt. Ray Small called for a fair catch but fumbled the ball and Purdue recovered. . This was typical for the day for the Buckeyes. This resulted in another Purdue field goal, Score 7-6 Ohio State.
With 26 seconds left in the first half, Purdue drove to the OSU 38. Purdue then completed a 55 yard field goal with 0:00 time on the clock. Purdue now led 9-7 at the half without scoring a single touchdown.
Purdue received the kickoff in the second half. With 4:02 elapsed they had a touchdown. Score 16-7 Purdue.
On the 2nd OSU drive in the 3rd quarter, Pryor threw an interception, It turned out to be tit-for-tat. Two Plays later OSU intercepted the ball.
But it was again tit-for-tat. Three plays later, Boilermaker Brandon King, who had intercepted Terrelle's first pass, intercepted a second pass from Terrelle. (King must be trying out for the position of Terrelle's favorite receiver.)
.
This Purdue interception set up a Purdue touchdown. Score: 23-7 Purdue.
The 4th quarter began with a punt reception and a drive by OSU. After an exciting 35 yard carry by Terrelle to the Purdue 3, revived my flagging spirits, I regained hope we could win. The old Terrelle was back. Almost any team would be able to gain 3 yards in 4 downs.
Terrelle gained 1 yard to the 2. Then he thew an incomplete pass to Ballard. I thought, "Oh Well", the 7th ranked team in the nation can surely gain 2 yards in 2 downs. Our quarterback had just completed a 35 yard run. He should be able to gain 2 yards in 2 downs. Third down: Pryor carries again and barely makes it back to the line of scrimmage. Then we receive a five yard penalty for delay of game. So we have to settle for a field goal after being on the 2 yard line with 1st & 10. Score: 23-10 Purdue.
On their next drive Purdue completed a 49 yard field goal. Score: 26-10 Purdue.
After receiving the kickoff, OSU started on their own 29 and put together a successful drive which included 4 completed passes to Posey, the last one on the goal line. Pryor carried it over. Tressel did muster enough courage to go for 2 points and was successful. Score: 26-18 Purdue. 7:14 left on the clock.
The action went back and forth for the rest of the game, OSU hoping for another 8 points to tie the game, which never materialized.
Final score: 26-18.
Pryor showed some flashes of talent but had 2 interceptions, a season total of 8, and 3 fumbles with 2 recovered by Purdue,. He had a very nice 35 yard run but only had 34 yards net for the day. He completed 17 passes out of 31 attempts for a respectable 221 yards.
To be fair, I believe his passing was very good concerning the porous quality of the Ohio State offensive line. Most of the time, Pryor did not have ample time to throw. He was constantly being pressured by the defensive lineman. The Purdue quarterback had much better protection. Another game changer was the fact that Purdue only had 1 penalty while OSU had 9 for 65 yards total.
Ohio State had a possible chance to take control of the ball on Purdue's final drive but they were penalized 15 yards for a face mask infraction, which gave Purdue a first down.
The bottom line is that Ohio State has multiple problems and seem to be intensifying instead of improving. I hope Coach Tressel can find the answers soon or we are apt to lose to Penn State, Iowa and Michigan. Many people are suggesting that Pryor's talents would be much better utilized at wide receiver or running back.
