Unraveling Ravelry: Social Media for the Fiber Arts

Barbie Crafts
Are you a yarner? Knitters and crocheters alike will be excited about Ravelry, the premier site for those who love the fiber arts. This site has been around since 2007 when it began as an invitation only beta site. Since then, the site has grown and offers an unbelievable array of resources for yarners like you! It is like a visit to your favorite friendly, local yarn shop.

While this site is certainly a go-to place for patterns for your knitting and crocheting, the amazing thing about Ravelry is the depth of interaction available here through social media. They even have a group that functions as a welcome wagon, being sure that new members get emails welcoming them to the community from real people like themselves.

You can move around Ravelry in many different ways, choosing different categories to explore. While they have the very latest and trendiest of yarns and patterns, the amazing thing is that you can even search through Red Heart Super Saver Yarn and get literally thousands of things to browse through.

There are so many aspects to this site that it may make the first-time visitor feel overwhelmed. It is like one big noisy meeting of knitters and crocheters, chatting, sharing patterns, sharing projects that they are working on, and more. If you are involved at all in the world of yarn, you will hear Ravelry referred to everywhere you look. Even in pod casts about knitting that are available, you hear constant references to Ravelry.

You can be, "on Ravelry," as knitters refer to it. It is free of charge, and you only need to go here and register. Do not be afraid if they make you feel very welcome!
