Unrequited Love

An Easter Poem

Johnathan Q. Moriarty
We did not weep at your bloody offer,
We did not mourn with your dearest mother,
We did not fill the poor's empty coffer --
We looked away from you, our big brother...

But you will love us more than any can,
You will cover us with your awesome grace,
You are more than some ordinary man,
You wait for us to take our rightful place.

We are but mindless sheep for the slaughter,
We are but the desert sand in the wind,
But you, our shepherd, who walks on water,
You, lord, are holy, you have never sinned.

You are without soil or stain; you are pure,
And this we can be -- because you endure.
