Unusual Christmas Gift Ideas

It's never too early to start on your holiday shopping to avoid the last minute rush. Many people I know actually start shopping for next year's holiday gifts the day after Christmas! Although I am not quite that methodized in my shopping habits, I have found an unusual place that you may have not thought about, for finding unique and unusual Holiday gifts throughout the year.

Before starting to look for that perfect something for someone that is special, the first thing you should do is keep little file cards or a little notebook about the people you buy for. Add notes about their likes, dislikes, favorite colors, hobbies, etc. Review and jot down additions several times a year. This keeps you aware of the possibilities of things you might see that would make a great holiday gift.

My favorite place to shop for holiday gifts is, believe it or not, thrift stores. Have you ever really looked at some of the "treasures" that can be found there? Many resale shops, charity stores and thrift stores take all kinds of things. For instance, say someone on your list is a fan of Jazz music. How about looking for an old jazz vinyl album or even an old 45? Even if it's too scratched to play, they could be hung on the wall to display as a wonderful piece of art.

How about the collectors on your list? Many people collect a wide spectrum of objects. Salt and pepper shakers, old vintage bottles, watches, board games, jigsaw puzzles are all things you can find in thrift and resale shops. Wouldn't these make an unusual Christmas gift for someone who would truly appreciate them?

For the clothes-aholic on your list, how about looking for some vintage clothing or accessories? A wide variety of belts, scarves, and purses can be found in these stores, and many of them have had hardly any wear and tear. Think how cool would it be to find an original macrame' belt from the 1970's in mint condition. That would make a fabulous one of a kind gift.

Unexpected or hard to find house wares can also be found in stores such as these. Have a gourmet chef "wannabe" on your list? Look for kitchen gadgets that aren't even made anymore. I have found hand held French fry slicers, unusual serving spoons, colanders, and a lot more.

Also, these types of stores carry home décor and furnishings. If you are the least bit handy or crafty, you could hand paint a small table, decoupage' a lamp shade or embroider on a small pillow. These types of gifts are always cherished by the receiver.

Christmas and Holiday gift shopping can be very entertaining if you look at it as an adventure and go with an open mind to be creative. By shopping in a thrift shop or resale shop you really can find some versatile and unique gifts that won't break the bank. Have fun this year, and add a new twist to your Holiday shopping.
