Unusual Ingredients You Can Add to Cornbread Mix

Cornbread is very easy to bake and can be made as a flat loaf or muffins. You can make corn bread from scratch using corn meal or you can use a Jiffy corn bread mix to make the task a bit easier. Either way you make it, you can spiff up the cornbread by adding extra ingredients to make the tasty treat a bit more interesting, and a little more healthy.

Add Creamed Corn to Cornbread

Add more corn flavor and extra moistness by adding creamed corn to your cornbread mix. You can replace all or part of the liquid that the recipe calls for with creamed corn. If the recipe calls for 1 cup of milk, you can do 1/2 cup of mild and 1/2 cup of creamed corn, or you can opt to skip the milk and add 1 cup of creamed corn.

Add Ham and Onion to Cornbread

If you want to turn ordinary cornbread into a savory bread that oozes with flavor, try adding ham and onion to the mix. Cut some ham (you can use any kind of ham) into small pieces or cubes and also chop some onion. Then brown the ham and onion a bit in a frying pan with a bit of oil or real butter. Then add the mixture, including the butter or oil that is left in the pan, to your cornbread mix. You can add as little or as much as you want to the mix. The more you add, the more it's like a fritter. This is a great way to use up ham leftovers.

Add Raisins and Apples to Cornbread

A nice way to serve cornbread for breakfast is to add fruit to the mix. Chop some apples into fine pieces and add about 1/4 cup (more or less) to the mix. Also add 1/4 cup of raisins. Then make the muffins or bread as directed on the package. Serve for breakfast with a bit of syrup poured on top and serve with a side of scrambled eggs and your favorite breakfast meat. This is one breakfast your family will sit down to eat!

Add Spices to Cornbread

Turn your cornbread into a full flavored treat by adding your favorite cooking spices, such as cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, or ginger. Add just one or a mix of all. If you like spice cake, you will love cornbread with these added spices. This also makes a nice dessert cornbread that you can serve warm with a scoop of ice cream on top or a dollop of whipped cream. You can also use the spiced cornbread as the base of a strawberry shortcake.
