The next time you are traveling through Florida on your way to Disney World, Cypress Gardens or any of the other major attractions that Florida is so famous for, try and take a side trip and see one of these unusual and out of the ordinary attractions in Florida. You deserve to have a vacation that is a bit out of the ordinary and adding one or two of these to your vacation will give you something unusual to talk about when you get home.

The Coral Castle is the result of the labors of one man, 28 years worth of them. His name was Edward Leedskalnin and he was born in 1887. At the age of 26 he feel in love and became engaged, but the bride changed her mind the day before the wedding. He never got over it and the castle is a monument to her. It is made of more than 1,100 tons of coral rock. He had no help whatsoever and used no heavy machinery. You can tour the castle Sunday-Thursday 8 AM - 6 PM, Friday-Saturday 8 AM - 9 PM (Year-Round)

No one has ever seen a skunk ape, at least as far as anyone knows. But one man, Dave Shealy firmly believes it exists and he has devoted his life to tracking one down. The museum is his work. Skunk Ape Research Headquarters is open to the public 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm. Besides information on the elusive Skunk Ape, you will see exhibits on reptiles and birds including alligators constrictors and exotic birds.

Sponges are a big business in Tarpon Springs, the natural ones not the nylon ones you by in the local store. The factory has a museum that is dedicated to the history of Tarpon Springs and the sponge industry. They also have the largest collection of natural sea sponges anywhere in the world. Make sure to see the movie as well. Both the museum and the movie are free.

Wausau, Florida proudly calls itself the Possum Capital of the World and the erected a monument to this noble creature in 1982. The possum was a food staple during hard times and saved thousands from going hungry. They even have a Possum Festival each year.
