Unusual Places to Find Jobs, Regardless of the Recession

Employers that Get Overlooked, but May Be Hiring

J. Motes
With so many people struggling to find jobs I thought I would write an article on places to seek employment that you may have missed. Many of these places are seasonal employers, short term employers, or simply places that don't generally advertise their openings. Use this list to not only look for a job, but use this list as a trigger to brainstorm places that I and others might not think of to find a job.

One of the few good things about this recession is that it is timed just before the taking of the national census. The Census Bureau will be hiring people to go out and count, annoy, and pry into the person lives of their fellow Americans. While the census process might be annoying, the Census Bureau does pay well and will be hiring people in large numbers. For more information on finding employment with the US Census Bureau, visit their website at www.census.gov. Once there the click Jobs@Census on the left and follow the instructions.

The first part of the year is defined as tax time. H&R Block, Liberty Tax, and others will be hiring tax preparers, office workers, managers, and others. These companies will generally be hiring folks to work only through tax season, but some will be able to stay on year around. If you can get into one of these or others company tax schools, do so. If they do not offer you a job you can use your newly learned skills to get a job with another tax preparer. Visit H&R Block's website at www.hrblock.com and Liberty's website at www.libertytax.com, for more employment information. Don't forget to hit local tax preparers and accountants for tax preparing jobs.

At least in my area, local, county, and state government employers rarely well advertise their jobs. Visit your local government agencies websites for employment information. The unemployment office itself may well be hiring. Don't forget the local Board of Education, Police, Fire Department, and Emergency Services. They don't hire only teachers, policeman, and fire fighters, but also office workers, janitors, and other support staff.

Never doubt the power of word of mouth. Inform everyone that you know that you are looking for a job (without looking desperate!). Go out and meet new people to help with your job search by joining a church, civic organization (Rotary, Lions Club, etc.), and volunteering. The more people you know the more people that can give you a hand.

Finding a job is often like a treasure hunt. Recession or not, having better ideas, better contacts, and putting forth more effort will often result in you finding a job while others are still home felling sorry for themselves. Get up every morning and give it your all finding a job and you will almost certainly be rewarded with gainful employment.
