Unusual Wedding Favors

Christina M.
You name it; it's a wedding favor. From the traditional matches and candies to the more modern water bottles and cameras, almost any product imaginable can be made into a wedding favor by adding the bride and groom's names to the product (and altering the packaging to fit the reception's colors). But if you're looking for something unique for your wedding, such as something offbeat and silly or even dark and menacing, here are a few ideas and places where you can get what you want.

If you're looking for kitchy or odd favors, there are variations on traditional candles. Buy Wedding Favors Online offers Ice Cream Cone Candles and Cupcake Candles.1,2 They also offer country cow candle favors3 for a Southern-themed wedding (or for bovine fans). HotRef.com offers grape candles4, Sweet Reflections sells "Love Bugs" Candles in a box that features the bride and groom's names5, and Island Brides has "Coffee Mug Candles", though I'm not sure how coffee is an island thing6. The oddest candle I found was the "Elegant Wedding Gown Candle" from the site Party and Wedding Favors7. While the detail is exquisite and the tiny wax dress is pretty, as I was thinking of my upcoming wedding, I couldn't help but imagine my relatives would feel as if they were lighting my head on fire.

While some favors seem clever and appropriate for themed weddings, such as Buyweddingfavorsonline.com's "Love Brew Teapot Timer"8, "Spicy Hot" Pepper Magnet"9, and a set of "Lucky In Love Playing Card Magnets"10, others can seem downright odd. A pizza cutter?11 A cheese grater?12 In order for wedding favors like a "We Clicked" mousepad13 and "Swept Off Our Feet" Keyboard Dusters14 to make sense as wedding favors, the couple would have either had to meet online or work in the online community. I'm not sure how a "Mini Classic Gumball Dispenser"15 could tie into a wedding theme, unless the bride and groom just really love candy. The same sort of thing could be said for "Mini-Gym Bag Placecard Holders"16, Personalized jellies17, Bee honey18, cake roll towels19, and heart-shaped calculators.20 They 're cute and quirky, but wouldn't really make sense unless the couple were gym buffs, jelly enthusiasts, honey fans, towel lovers, and/or accountants, respectfully. Personalized silk flower petals21 may or may not appeal to couples depending on personal taste, and the practicality of having wedding-themed frisbees22 would largely depend on wedding location and whether or not the reception is to be held outside. Fortune cookies, however, are always popular, and there are numerous sites devoted to custom ones, and Custom Fortune Cookie Company offers wedding cookies23 as well as cookie bouquets and giant cookies.

For those who prefer dark and gothic to whimsical and silly, 2darksisters.com offers tiny coffins that can be filled with rice, candy, or whatever you'd like.24 Vampire Vineyards is a winery in Transylvania that has vampiric themed labels25, and The Chocolate Vault offers molded chocolate in spooky figures26 and has a couple of pirate designs for brides still smitten with Captain Jack Sparrow. Pirate weddings are a popular theme, and a woman describes her wedding experience on the site Favor Ideas 27 and details how she mailed out invitations via messages in a bottle. Her sister-in-law made small chests full of pirate booty, and included miniture rum bottles in small pails. The site Wedding Themes and More suggests pirate themed jewelry for favors, as well as chocolate coins in gold foil, bandanas, and pirate bandages.28

Regardless of theme or personal taste, there are a variety of unusual and downright odd favors out there, but the most unique and the strangest ones that I saw were from the sites Beau Coup and Wedding Star: bubblegum brides and grooms, and toilet paper. While the "Wedding Bubblegum Buddies"29 look cute as a button, they become even more intersting once it's noted that they are completely edible. As for the strangest, wedding toilet paper30 takes the cake for the oddest wedding favor. I'm sure that guests, upon seeing this item as a wedding favor, would be "amused and amazed", but for some of my relative, this would translate to "confused and concerned". As a bridal shower favor, it's a cute idea, but a wedding favor? It would have to be a silly, whimsical wedding (or a wedding between those working in the waste management industry). Although, it could really work as a favor for another kind of event...a pick-me-up party for a recently divorced friend.

Early wedding favors, called bonbonnieres, were boxes made of porcelain, crystal, precious stones or metal with sugar delicacies inside. (http://weddings.lovetoknow.com/wiki/History_of_Wedding_Favors)
