Unusual Weekend or Daytrip Get Away Destination Ideas

Eloah James
You have little interest in antiquing while you stay the weekend at a stranger's house or, as it is more commonly known, a Bed & Breakfast. Clubbing and loud concerts heavily scented with the smell of spilled beer and the pungent aroma of marijuana don't really hold that much appeal for you, either. You enjoy nature, but find the idea of sleeping on the ground less than enjoyable. You feel most comfortable when there is at least a little bit of oddity to be found. If one or more of those statements is true, this article is probably for you.

Drive-through Safari
There are parks in many states across this vast country of ours wherein one may pilot their automobile around a dirt road. This road meanders through acres of fields populated with a large variety of wild animals. These wild animals can be fed from the comfort and safety of your vehicle via buckets of specially issued nuggets. Some parks allow feeding directly from your palm, while others require that you hold the bucket out for the animals. A word of caution: watch out for any thieving camels and the thumb-hungry ostrich. Do some research of the park nearest you to see what other visitors have had to say, since you wouldn't want to patronize an establishment with animals that appear to have been neglected or allowed to remain in poor health.

Haunted Hotels
If you enjoy watching "the ghost wrestling channel," as Syfy is sometimes affectionately called, you might consider taking a trip to one of the tourist and hospitality establishments featured on "Ghost Hunters" or "Destination Truth." There have been paranormal investigations at many destinations including several hotels and museums. While some of those hotels are on the pricey side, if you go schedule your trip during the "off" season for that area, you can often get rates much less expensive than those advertised, sometimes as low as one third of the regular season price. Often those who have had themselves inspected for this unusual activity will offer tours of any "haunted" areas for free or at least cheap.

Support Local Artists
While you might not enjoy antiques, you might like eclectic kitsch or funky art, made by local men and women in your area. Find a small town near you that has an annual festival associated with it and chances are you will discover a place with unusual shops and people, both full to the brim with personality.
