Upcoming 2010 Movies for Kids

Jennifer Amlie
Many movies for kids are released each year and 2010 is no exception. With all the choices out there, it's difficult to pick just a few to go see in the theater. Which movies for kids are the most anticipated next year? Here's a list of five movies being released in 2010 that kids and parents will enjoy.

2010 Kid-Friendly Movie: Shrek Forever After
Set to be released on May 21st is the last Shrek movie. Growing tired of the quiet life, Shrek makes a deal with Rumpelstitskin that sends in him into an alternate universe. In this universe, he never met Fiona and Lord Farquaad is still alive. Shrek needs to reverse Rumpelstistskin's deal to save his friends and family. All of the favorite characters like Donkey and Puss in Boots are back, as the newcomers from the last movie, Artie and Merlin. I'm hoping that the twist of a different universe and the return of John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad will refresh the Shrek series.

2010 Kid-Friendly Movie: Alice in Wonderland
Alice in Wonderland gets a Tim Burton make-over on March 5. Brought up in the Victorian era, 19 year old Alice doesn't fit in. She follows a white rabbit down a hole and discovers Wonderland. It's a place she has been to before, but can't remember. Alice is the only one who can stop the Red Queen's horrible reign. The movie stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Cater as the Red Queen and Alan Rickman as the voice of the caterpillar. I think a story like Alice in Wonderland is a good match for Burton's unique style. It has a wonderful cast, many whom have worked with Burton before.

2010 Kid-Friendly Movie: Toy Story 3
The long over-due third Toy Story movie will be released June 18th. Andy is about to go off the college. Buzz, Woody and the rest of the toys are accidently dropped off at a day care center, instead of being put in the attic. The toys must deal with the playful but careless day care crowd. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return as Woody and Buzz. It's been ten years since Toy Story 2 was released. Hopefully, the magic and fun of the first two movies will still shine in Toy Story 3.

2010 Kid-Friendly Movie: The Last Airbender
Based on the popular Nickelodeon animated series, the live action movie is expected to be released on July 2nd. Aang is the last of the air bending tribe and the Avatar. He has the power to manipulate all four elements and draw upon the past incarnations of Avatars. Along with his friends, Sakko and Katara, he must bring balance back to the world and defeat the warring Fire Nation. This is the first movie of a planned trilogy. It is directed by M. Night Shyamalan. If the movie is kept close to the series' storyline, it should be a wonderful, blockbuster movie this summer.

2010 Kid-Friendly Movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
The last of the Harry Potter novels is being split into two movies. The first part is scheduled to be released on November 19th. Deathly Hallows focuses on Voldemort's continuing rise to power. Harry, Ron and Hermione are searching for Voldemort's horcruxes. Once all of them are destroyed, Harry can try to defeat Voldemort once and for all. The split is thought to take place at the end of chapter 22. This is maybe changed before the movie is released. I'm hoping the split means more of the book will be included in the movies.

All of these movies are based on well known and loved books, movies or television shows. There are plenty of other movies for kids being released in 2010. I believe that these five will be enjoyed by both children and adults.

Harry Potter, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Shrek? These are children's films? Wow, who knew? I'm a parent and I can't imagine these being appropriate for children.
