War Horse: Steven Spielberg adapts the stage hit that's won Olivier, Evening Standard and Critics' Circle Awards. During World War I, an underage farmhand head to the trenches in France to save his horse Joey who has been sold to the cavalry. I guess there won't be any giant puppets like in the play, but the cast already includes David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston. This upcoming film is now due out on December 28, 2011.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: George Smiley emerges from semi-retirement to hunt down a Soviet agent hidden within MI6 in an upcoming movie based on one of John le Carre's best novels. Gary Oldman plays Smiley with co-stars including Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch. It's now due to be released September 16, 2011 in the UK.
One Day: Based on the popular novel by David Nicholls, wealthy Dexter and working class Emma reunite one day a year for 20 years after first hooking up at their graduation in 1988. If you're always at a loss for what to do with yourself on St. Swithin's Day, spend it with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. It's now scheduled for a September 30, 2011 release in the UK. And yes, St. Swithin's is actually July 15 but you can always rent the film next year.
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn: Steven Spielberg also directs this upcoming film based on the comic strips by Belgian artist Georges Rémi under the pen name of Herge. Tintin and a bunch of friends go hunting sunken treasure on a lost ship. It stars Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, and Daniel Craig. The release is now due on December 28, 2011.
Thor: See what happens when you mix director Kenneth Branagh with Marvel Comics. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) gets banished from Asgard and starts protecting mere earthlings. Anthony Hopkins plays his father Odin. It's now due in theaters May 6, 2011.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo: I enjoyed the Swedish film with Noomi Rapace, but the English language versions of Stieg Larsson's bestsellers are coming too. David Fincher ("The Social Network") directs with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. This upcoming film should be released December 21, 2011.
All 6 of these 2011 upcoming movies are worth seeing.

Post a CommentThank you for the heads up!
I think One Day sounds interesting.
Thank you for the list, I cannot remember the last movie I saw at a theater that wasn't animated!
Great article - will have to look for these movies!
Wonderful list for movie goers.
Both looking forward to but dreading the Tintin film. I wish it would get more interest in the Belgian reporter in the US, but the images I've seen from it look horrible.
Good list, and had a lot of ones I had never heard about!
These sound promising. This year has to be better than last year.
I'd like to see more movies this year...nice list.
