Upcoming Fairytale Movies of 2011 that Twist the Classics

Check out the upcoming fairytale movies of 2011 with a twist. From grown-up fairytale characters to a pot-head prince and more, the twisted fairytale movies of 2011 are turning classic childhood tales into stories aimed at older audiences:

Beastly

"I Am Number Four" star Alex Pettyfer tries to prove that he's not just another pretty face in "Beastly", one of the upcoming fairytale movies of 2011 that takes a kids' classic Disney is most known for doing and modernizes it for teen consumption. Pettyfer plays a rich, snobby high school student who is turned into a tattoo-covered, scarred-up freak by the school's resident witch (Mary-Kate Olsen) for his bad behavior. His only hope at being turned back to normal lies in getting a girl at school he never paid attention to (Vanessa Hudgens) to fall in love with him. So will "Twilight" fans fall for this twisted and dark fairytale? Well, if they can accept a dead guy and a wolf as prince charming, the target audience for this March 4, 2011 film should have no problem with Alex Pettyfer de-prettying his face (plus Neil Patrick Harris has a role!).

Red Riding Hood

Speaking of "Twilight" and wolves, the director of the first "Twilight" movie (Catherine Hardwicke) has also turned the gory childhood tale of Little Red Riding Hood into one of the upcoming fairytale movies of 2011 aimed at teens. Amanda Seyfried stars as Red (well, her character's name is actually Valerie), a girl torn between her love for a brooding woodcutter (Shiloh Fernandez) and her arranged marriage to a rich boy (Max Irons). But her love story is made even more complicated by the fact that a man-eating werewolf is lurking around her village. Gary Oldman stars a priest on the hunt for the beast, which just might be someone close to Valerie. The "what big eyes you have" line from the trailer is more than a little bit silly, but I can see a red riding hood becoming a big spring accessory when this movie hits theaters on March 11, 2011.

Sucker Punch

Well, this is one of the upcoming movies of 2011 here that's not really based on a classic fairytale, but director Zack Snyder ("300") has referred to it as "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns." Emily Browning plays the Alice of the movie, a girl whose evil stepfather has had her institutionalized and set to be lobotomized. In an attempt to escape her fate, the girl retreats into her mind and goes on a journey to find five objects that might help set her free. A team of girls played by Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, and Abbie Cornish join her on her journey in a dark world full of brothels, B52 bombers, dragons, machine guns, robots, and samurais. So this is one of the upcoming fairytale movies that will likely appeal to girls and guys when it hits theaters on March 25, 2011.

Your Highness

This is another of the upcoming movies here that's not based on a classic fairytale, but it does feature fairytale elements like princesses, princes, magic, and dragons. However, most fairytales aren't stoner comedies (get it? "Your Highness"?). James Franco stars as your typical brave prince on a mission to save his princess bride-to-be (Zooey Deschanel), while Danny McBride plays his slacker brother, a lover of booze, loose maidens, and wizard's weed. However, he's forced to join his brother on a journey to rescue his damsel in distress under the threat of being cut off from his family's fortune, and the two brother are joined on their quest by a mysterious warrior maiden (Natalie Portman). So if you're a fan of fairytales and funny movies, don't miss this one on April 8, 2011.

Puss in Boots

Well, this one isn't one of the upcoming fairytale movies of 2011 that's taking aim at an older crowd, but grown-ups that enjoy the Shrek movies will also love seeing the adventures of Antonio Banderas' adorable kitty character before he met the big green guy. He's joined by a love interest as Salma Hayek voices Miss Kitty, and the two go on a swashbuckling journey to steal the goose with the golden eggs. The whole family can enjoy this one on November 4, 2011.

So get ready to see fairytales as you've never seen them before in 2011 as they grow up, evolve, and try to appeal to an older crowd.
