1. The Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema
I am a huge fan of animated movies which began with my introduction to Disney, The Little Mermaid, and Japanese animation series' such as Sailor Moon. The Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema says it all in its title. It is a festival that features animated films that extend beyond just Japanese anime. It is held in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and this year it will be from November 19th to the22nd.
The website for the Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema is http://www.wfac.ca/. The festival is open to the public and tickets can be bought at the door or online. They also sell them for individual days or as weekend passes.
2. The Austin Film Festival
What I love about the Austin Film Festival is its concept. The Festival began in 1994 and it focuses on the writer and their contribution to film and television. The festival caters to both the novice and the veteran. The festival is located in Austin, Texas and will be held this year from October 22nd to the29th. There will be special honors at this year's festival for Ron Howard who directed such movies as The Da Vinci Code, Apollo 13 and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
The website for the Austin Film Festival is http://www.austinfilmfestival.com/new/. It is open to the general public and is a non for profit organization. You can become a friend of the festival which gets you access to year round events including: screenings, script readings and meet and greets with screenwriters.
3. The Chicago International Children's Film Festival
Located in Chicago, Illinois, the Chicago International Children's Film Festival is third on this list because it is so much more then just a festival of films. The Chicago International Children's Film Festival presents multi-cultural cinema but also offer seminars, classes, and other educational and cultural programs for adults and children. It is also the largest film festival that features children's films. It will take place from October 23rd thru to November 2nd.
The Chicago International Children's Film Festival's website is http://www.cicff.org/. It is open to the general public and tickets can be purchased online or at the festival. They also have information for school groups that would like to attend the festival.
4. The Chicago International Film Festival
The Chicago International Film Festival is held in Chicago, Illinois. It is on my list because it is one of America's oldest film festivals and Chicago is a wonderful city to visit. The festival screens full length features, live action and animated short films. This year it will be held from October 2nd thru to the21st.
The Chicago International Film Festival's website is http://www.chicagofilmfestival.org. It is open to the general public and like the Chicago International Children's film festival there are educational programs for children, parents and teachers.
5. Denver Underground Film Festival
The Denver Underground Film Festival is located in Denver, Colorado. The film fest was founded in 1997. It will be held this year from October 15the thru to the 17th. The festival features films from independent filmmakers from around the world. The film categories are experimental, avant-garde, animated, documentary, and music videos. The films can be either full length or short.
The Denver Underground Film Festival's website is http://www.duffcinema.com/. The festival is open to the general public and tickets are only bought at the door. What made me choose this film festival is because I enjoy to watch movie that are not considered to be the "norm" and this is a good festival to find a little bit of the different.
