If you need a break from holiday shopping and celebrations this December, then going to the cinema could be the thing for you. There's a variety of film being released in December 2009, so no matter what your movie taste, there should be something to interest you. Here's an introduction to some of the films scheduled for release in December 2009.

Sherlock Holmes
Guy Ritchie's action adventure take on Sherlock Holmes stars Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. You might need to put some of your preconceptions about Sherlock Holmes to the side, but the movie looks like a lot of fun.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel
The sequel to the first Alvin and the Chipmunks movie promises more high-pitched entertainment that the whole family can enjoy together.

The Lovely Bones
Based on the novel by Alice Sebold, this film is about a girl who is murdered. After her death, she spends years watching her family (and perversely her killer) as they go on with their lives. Saoirse Ronan (you might recognize her from City of Ember or Atonement) stars, with a supporting cast including Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, and Susan Sarandon. The book was a best-seller, so the movie is sure to get a lot of attention.

Up In The Air
George Clooney stars in this new offering from the director of Juno. The story is based on the novel of the same name by Walter Kirn. Clooney plays a businessman with the goal to earn 5 million frequent flyer miles. He's nearly reached it-and has met the woman of his dreams-when his job is at risk due to company downsizing. Clooney should be as charismatic as ever.

Did You Hear About The Morgans?
Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker star in this romantic comedy as a successful New York couple having marital problems. After witnessing a murder and being relocated with the witness protection program, though, they're forced to interact in new ways. It should be a good date movie.

Brothers
This tense drama stars Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Natalie Portman. When a marine is presumed dead in Afghanistan, his brother becomes increasingly involved with his wife and children back home. However, he eventually is freed from the Taliban, and returns home to find things different and strange. Expect a heavy movie-if the actors can do the story justice, it should be an Oscar contender.

Other movies scheduled for release in December include: Armored, Avatar, and It's Complicated.
