Update Closet Doors with Embossed Wall Paper

Ann Siper
Embossed wallpaper is the perfect way to update plain old closet doors, especially the bi fold kind. If your home was built in the 1950's or 60's, then by fold closet doors are just one of the many outdated features you are probably remodeling.

Try using embossed wallpaper and a little elbow grease to update old closet doors on a budget.

To Update Your Closet Doors With Embossed Wall Paper You Will Need:

Embossed Wall Paper

Trim

Finishing Nail

Primer

Paint

Scissors

Exacto Knife

The first step is to go ahead and measure hoe tall and wide each panel of your bifold doors are. If you have sliding doors this update will work well also because the wall paper is very thin.

Now, cut out sheets of your embossed wall paper to fit each front of the panels on the outdated close door. Use an exacto knife and a straight edge to keep things in line.

Tip: You can buy embossed wall paper in many patterns at yoru local home improvement sore. Look for beadboard, vintage ceiling tin patterns, brick, and even wood grains. Any of these are a fun look for the closet doors.

Go ahead and sand each closet door, then wipe away any dust.

Read the instructions on yoru embossed wall paper. Many of these products want you to apply the wall paper to a primed surface, not a painted surface. If this is the case with your wall paper, then you will need to apply a coat of primer to your outdated closet doors.

Now, once the primer dries, roll your wall paper panels through some water to activate the glue on the back of them. One at a time applies each panel to the front of the closet door panels.

I like to keep a wet sponge and a bucket of water nearby to help smooth out any air bubbles in the paper along the way.

You can also do any trimming with an exacto knife to clean up edges as you go.

Once the wall paper has dried you are ready to paint it. Latex paint works best and in any color you wish.

If you choose to use ceiling tin embossed wall paper, then try applying a metallic paint to the closet doors. Fun vintage silver is a cool and trendy look. For a more rich look opt for an antique gold.

Another fun look is to paint the closet doors the same colors as your walls. This will make the embossed designs really stand out.
