Update the GPS Before Taking a Road Trip

GPS Devices Require Updating Before a Long Road Trip

Michelle Smith
In today's world of technology, many of us use a GPS navigation device to make or road trips easier. Failing to update the GPS before setting out on a trip often results in missed destinations or arrivals at defunct gas stations. More than once I have searched for a gas station or food mart on my GPS only to arrive at an abandoned building. If you suddenly run low on gas or have a emergency that requires the fast use of a restroom, this mistake can cause a lot of trouble for your road trip.

During an 8 hour long road trip to Niagara Falls, I forgot to update the GPS before starting the trip. Since it was very early in the morning when the road trip began, I failed to notice the gas getting low. When I did realize it, it was almost on empty. After a quick search on my GOS navigation device, I located the nearest gas station. It took me off the highway and down a winding road. As I drove I feared that I was going to some out-of-the-way location but I trusted my GPS device. What I failed to realize was that I hadn't updated it in over a year.

When I heard the familiar voice of my GPS say, "Arriving at gas station on left" I looked over to find a wide open field. Thinking it was off by a block or two, I kept driving. Nothing. Then on the corner, about a mile from the original location, I saw a defunct gas station, rusted and boarded up.

Before leaving for the road trip, link the GPS to your home computer for an update. If you can't find the software that came with the device, visit the manufacturer's Web site for a download that easily allows you to bring the GPS up-to-date. It will only take a few minutes to update the GPS.

After hooking into the computer, the GPS will update the maps, locations and other components such as icons, sounds and features. New streets are added and if you are lucky most of the old buildings removed. This simple task ensures your road trip doesn't take a wrong turn.
