Update Your Look for the Holiday Season

Rebecca Furtado
The holiday entertainment season is well underway. It is also the end of another year and the start of the very cold season in some areas of the United States. It is time to upgrade and assess your makeup and skin care routine. Christmas gets together and New Year's Eve are events that most of us want to look our best at. Now is the time to tune up or even totally overhaul your cosmetic and skin care routine.

The holiday to do list should include time for you. Try a new sassy easy to care for hair style. It will save you time during the busy holiday season and instantly brighten your mood. It is a good time to look for specially packaged skin care products. This time of year you will many times find cleansers, toners, and moisturizers packaged together to give as gifts. It is a good time to get a new line of products without having to pay for each individual product.

Do a little research first and read reviews of the product line you are considering investing in on the internet. Usually department store cosmetic counters are not as cheap as the larger discount stores, but for a little more money you can get the store expert on cosmetic products to help you select the right product line. It is even likely that they may have samples of certain skin care products.

Look in the mirror after you have removed your makeup. Is your skin dry or oily? Is your skin combination? Has your skin changed from last year? Things like childbirth, menopause, and even a move to a drier climate might have you considering new skin care products you have not considered before. Be sure you know what kind of changes your skin has undergone in the last year and adjust your skin care routine accordingly.

You may be downsizing. If you have a bottle of toner that is still mostly full, because you did not use much and now it is aged and must be thrown out; consider a smaller bottle of toner. If you have been using moisturizer at night and now you have moved to a more humid climate, you may find you only need a light moisturizer under your makeup during the day time hours.

Holiday parties are a good chance to try out new makeup routines. If you are going with a tinted moisturizer instead of a heavy powder foundation, see how comfortable you feel with your change at a family get-together. Avoid experimenting at office parties and on holiday dates when you must look your best. If you want to use bold colors like bright red; Christmas time is the perfect excuse. If you do not usually wear eyeliner, wear it to a New Year's Eve party and really make your eyes dramatic. You may also want to try some of the new mascara colors like plum; it looks like regular mascara from far away , but it can make you eyes really stand out..

Glittery eye shadow and lip color are always appropriate to wear at the holidays. Avoid all over glitter to avoid looking like a middle school girl. Over all glitter or shimmery bronzer can really highlight wrinkles in older women. Bronzer in general ,unless you have 'real' color from the sun ,can make winter complexion appear to be too orange. Rich browns and plums are great colors to match your favorite little black dress. Statement necklaces are all the rage this holiday season so if you plan to wear a necklace to draw attention to your face you may want to mute your choice of makeup colors overall.

Look for unique holiday fragrances. Mix some essential oils to get that special holiday fragrance. Vanilla and clove or pine and cinnamon make great unique holiday scent statements. While you're out looking to update your makeup don't forget to try some of the new fragrances out there that you might want to ask Santa for.

Nice work! I love to bright red nails and lipstick at Christmas and New Year's, too!
