His owner, Mabel Ramey, spoke with WYFF TV's Kim Quintero. Ramey said she has owned Pookie since he was a puppy and that she loved him and took good care of him. Unfortunately, she has hit some bad times financially and had to move to temporary quarters. She put her home up for sale. Since she wasn't able to take Pookie with her just yet, she left him at home chained to his dog house.
Mabel Ramey said she played with him and took care of him. She also said all the neighbors loved him and he was like the neighborhood dog. One neighbor, Mark Harmon, thinks he might have seen the person who set Pookie on fire. Harmon didn't pay much attention because Pookie didn't bark at the unknown man.
Harmon is upset with himself now wishing he had gone outside and questioned the person to find out what he was doing. Unfortunately, he didn't. He also didn't see the man's face. He was only able to give a description of the man's clothing.
Mabel Ramey had to sign over her rights to Pookie because she doesn't have the means to pay for his medical care. There is a bright light at the end of this for Pookie, but it will be a while. He will most likely have surgery on Monday. But he will have a new, loving home when he is better.
The Greenville County Animal Care Services reports that people from all over the United States are calling to donate money for Pookie's care. There is also a long and growing list of names of people that want to adopt him as soon as he is able to be adopted.
People who do mean and hurtful things to animals often brag about it to others. Hopefully the person who did this will brag to someone and that someone will turn him in to the police. Whoever did this needs to be punished. For Pookie's sake he needs to be punished severely, not just a slap on the wrist.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel for this brave dog. It's just a shame Pookie had to go through hell to get to that light.

Post a CommentI'm very emotional about stories like this. Why do humans have to pick on poor helpless animals? Catching up on pvs...
I will never understand how people can harm other people and animals.
Thanks for the update!!!
Sad as it is the owner should have taken him to the shelter if she could not care for Pookie. Leaving him chained to a dog house is cruel punishment for a dog no matter her excuse.
The unimaginable has become commonplace.
So sad! WTH is wrong with people =0)
I do agree that the owner should have done more for her pet then chain him to the doghouse. Looking for an alternate solution for her pet was her responsibility as a dog owner. Now, when they catch this individual the crime should be a felony and not a misdemeanor; hence...jailtime, and not a few dollars in fines.
I agree with Major Jester. People like Ramey should be charged. This is such a sick deed and inhumane deed.. ugh!
Stories like this break my heart. Usually people that abuse animals go on to abuse humans as well. These people should receive very stiff sentences. Poor doggy!! : (
Ms. Ramey's claim of love and care for Pookie lost all credence and evaporated into thin air the day she abandoned the dog chained to the dog house. She should be charged with animal cruelty.
