Update a Preschooler's Bedroom for an Elementary School Student Without Remodeling

As your preschooler outgrows simple ABCs and 123s, he may also outgrow his room decor. Update his preschool room to a room better suited to an elementary school student, without remodeling. Update a color scheme and incorporate phonics and new educational themes.

Update a Preschooler's Bedroom for an Elementary School Student Without Remodeling

Rethink the Color Scheme

There are some wall colors which you may want to reconsider for children ages five to eight, according to Sherwin-Williams. Any gray should be replaced with a more neutral beige. Children of this age also do not appreciate dark colors including black or dark brown. Stark white is also not pleasing to the elementary school child.

Add Energetic Colors

Colors which are appealing to children of the elementary school age include bright colors, but not necessarily the same primary colors they enjoyed as preschoolers. Red is still a popular color for this age group, as is orange. Another bright and appealing color is yellow. The only cool color that children in this age are drawn too is violet. (Sherwin-Williams)

Update Bedding and Window Treatments

Add these more interesting colors to the elementary school student's bedroom by updating the bedding and the window treatments. Large floor pillows are an easy way to add color, and create comfortable reading space for the elementary school child.

Focus on Monday through Organization

From clothing to books, organize the elementary school student's bedroom with a Monday through Friday theme. Use closet organizers, including hanging cube shelves and label them Monday through Friday. For young athletes, use a second hanging cube shelf for the weekends or for sports practice clothes.

Elementary school kids can keep their clothing, uniforms, projects and other items organized by day.

Include a large wall calendar to help the elementary school child with his schedule. A large chalkboard or chalkboard wall is useful for tracking birthday parties, sports practice and school field trips. Or, consider creating a large-one month calendar using cork board squares. A one-week calendar could also in lieu of the monthly calendar.

Phonics

Trade in ABC decor for any decor that emphasizes phonics. School supply stores and dollar stores are good sources of flash cards, die-cut wall hangings and other materials which include phonics.

Update the Bookshelf

It's time to recycle the board books and replace them with early reader books, in the elementary schooler's bedroom.

Transportation to Biology

The male preschooler may have passed through his transportation phase and may be moving into the dinosaur phase. Refocus decor items and room themes from transportation and machinery to living things, including dinosaurs, large animals, plants or undersea creatures. Adding outer space as a bedroom theme would also be appropriate.
