Update on the Save Our Soaps Campaign for One Life to Live and All My Children

Will the Fans Efforts Make an Impact?

One of the groups to take on the soap operas' cancellation is Save AMC & OLTL, a very popular Facebook group. The amount of members is increasing minutely and currently has almost 4,000 members. Fans are also donating money on the website http://soapfansunite.webs.com to purchase ads in popular media publications. They realize this battle won't be won overnight and plan to fight for as long as it takes.

All of the groups are approaching the SOS (Save our Soaps) campaign with an attitude of take no prisons. The companies who advertise on ABC are being contacted daily by fans until each of them joins Hoover in yanking their ads off the network. Advertisers currently being targeted by fans include: General Mills, Hershey's, Excedrin, Campbell's Soup, and Energizer. Apple is another possible company to be targeted.

There is even a petition with almost 10,000 signatures for Brian Frons (the head of ABC Daytime) to be fired. Fans are also contacting 3ballproductions.com to inform them that their new shows (the planned replacements of the beloved soaps) will not be watched.

All of the ABC programs (except for One Life to Live, All My Children, and General Hospital) are being boycotted, which has caused the primetime ratings to go down for some shows including Dancing with the Stars and Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. ABC's network ranking has also lowered, causing FOX to move into first place. If all ABC programs (besides the soaps) weren't already being boycotted, Rachael Ray would be on the hit list. It's reported that she is excited about the new shows.

There have been rumors that ABC owned SoapNet has pushed out the date when it'll switch over to Disney Jr due to programming issues. Originally the date was January 2012, but now it's the summer of 2012. SoapNet airs many programs including other networks' soap operas. Fans are hoping that SoapNet won't go off the air. They also rerun many old shows that viewers enjoy including the original 90210, One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls, and more.

Is it possible that the soaps could go to another network? Even though Oprah has reportedly declined to purchase the soaps for OWN, fans are still pleading that she help them out. However, she released a video stating that she felt no money was to be made in continuing the beloved ABC soaps. It is rumored that the company who owns NBC may purchase them, but this is only a rumor.

The new rallying cry of the fans is, "Out with the mouse," referring to how Disney owns ABC and the fans must go after Disney in order to save their soaps.

One Life to Live is the ONLY ABC show I watch. So, if OLTL goes off so will ABC in my home and on my computer. As far as Disney goes, it hasn't had any morals since the late Walt Disney. The grandson abviously has issues. ABC

I am not watching ABC except for the soaps. I am a professional and educated woman, and I record the soaps and I DVR AMC, OLTL and GH. I don't believe the ratings reflect people like me. Are "Nielsen families" really representative anyway? Many professional people don't care for being a Nielsen family because they don't want the hustle - my friend was asked a while ago and she refused. Also, OLTL is doing well, and it's ratings are increasing, so why on earth did they pick OLTL to be canceled? Then they have a nerve to lie to our face and claim how the ratings were declining. Hello? Also, it's clear to anybody with brains that no professional who DVRs soap operas will record daytime reality shows or talk shows. There is already zillion of such shows on primetime, so why bother? I think Frohns just has his personal dislike of soaps and preconceived notions. Otherwise, why to chose the 3rd highest rated soap and the one with rising ratings?

Watch out ABC - you best undo this lame decision or it will come back to bite you in the you know where! Most likely it already has.

I'll DVR GH if it will help, but I can't get into it. But I don't want those fans to feel like this.

Also, Rachel Ray is officially dead to me.

I wouldn't take it out on General Hospital, all the soaps are important. It should be the only show other than all my children and one life to live that the fans will watch on ABC.

  • Twinkle4/21/2011

Wait, why are people taking this out on General Hospital?! If you want to save daytime, shouldn't viewers be flocking to the ABC soaps to drive the ratings UP and prove the shows worth saving instead of tanking them and destroying the entire genre!?
