Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Jinx from the Book of Shadows Vol. II

Layla A.
When you think about blue eyeshadow, you are most likely frightened and scared to use it. Honestly, I do not blame or pass any judgment! I am equally as scared as anyone else. I do not want anyone to think that Jinx is an easy color to pull off- no blue colors are, really. But, because of the undertone and shade, I find it much easier than a lot of other blues out there. I am not quite sure why, but I am very fond of the name Jinx for a blue eyeshadow- maybe they know blue colors can be evil and jinxing if not pulled off correctly? Read on if you want to hear about a shade that is just as gorgeous as it is intimidating.

COLOR

As I said earlier, Jinx is a blue. However, it is not a classic blue, so to speak. The color actually reminds me a lot of a slightly lighter version of MAC's Freshwater. Is a cool blue, but a medium blue, in an odd way. It has very cool undertones, but still remains in the bracket of medium blue. When swatched, it is very pigmented and scary. However, when applied to the actual eye, it lightens to a nice blue with a gorgeous sheen.

FORMULA

As I said in the 'color' section of this review, it is not as pigmented as one would think, which in my opinion, is a good thing when working with blues. Just a little too much, and your entire eye look is destroyed. But, it is still just as pigmented as any other MAC eyeshadow out there, if not more pigmented, and blends better than Freshwater. This can also be sheered down to an ice blue, which is absolutely gorgeous. It does last all day with a base, but without one, you may get some fading. It is also just as soft as any other Urban Decay eyeshadow, and a little goes a long way.

FUNCTIONALITY

I really like that this color is not super bright, because then the blue can be built up to the intensity you desire, making this usable by everyone, in my opinion. If you start with a really bright color, only professionals and blue lovers will go near it for that intensity. I had my mom try using this color as her favorite color is blue, and while she had some trouble at first, she was able to pull it off and rock it by the third day. As with everything else in life, practice makes perfect. This could be a great pop of color for spring and summer, and when worn with deeper blues, could make a gorgeous icy look for winter and fall.

PACKAGING/PRICE

Unfortunately, Jinx is not currently sold at Urban Decay because it was in the limited edition Book of Shadow Vol. II. This retailed for $48 where Urban Decay is sold, and I am sure you can still find it floating around on the internet somewhere, however don't expect to pay pocket change for it- it will have skyrocketed in price by now.

FINAL OPINIONS

I really like Jinx as it is bright, but somewhat versatile. If my mom could feel comfortable wearing it, I am sure anyone can. It can be sheered out or built up for a range of cool-toned blues, and has the awesome Urban Decay formula that everyone knows I love so much. I really do wish they sold this one on its own, because I think it would really sell and become very popular in the makeup community. However, it was nice to have a taste of this wonderful blue color, and I will try to savor it all throughout summer.
