Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion: A Review

Michelle S.
I'm sure you've had this same scenario happen to you: You wake up in the morning, get dressed, and put on your makeup for the day. It always looks amazing at 7am - every brushstroke is perfect, and you feel like you could model. Your eyeshadow is especially amazing; all the shades are perfectly blended and it just rationalizes the fact that you spent way too much on that department store eyeshadow anyway. When you leave for work, you are the picture of professionalism and beauty, and you walk out to door head held high.

8 hours later...

You happen to stop in the bathroom before you leave after a long day behind a desk. Glancing in the mirror, you are horrified to see the person staring back at you; not only is this stranger not the polished picture from the morning, but she also has faded eyeshadow and lines along her eyelids due to that expensive eyeshadow sinking into the creases! It is a ghastly sight at best, and you leave embarrassed and kicking yourself for buying that expensive eyeshadow at all.

What is a girl to do?

This past Christmas I received a small gift from my sister: Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion. Maybe you've read the reviews: it was a 2008 winner of Sephora's "Best of Sephora" and is highly reviewed by actual users on sites like Amazon.com. So I tried it that morning and have never looked back. I love this product, and have to share my results.

This product is one of few that actually lives up to its promise: put it on before eyeshadow and it prevents creasing and leaves your eyeshadow looking exactly as it did from the moment you put it on. The results are really amazing: I put on my eyeshadow at 7am before work and it looks the same at 5:30pm when I arrive home. I even go out afterwards without having to retouch. If you decide to try Eyeshadow Primer Potion yourself, I highly recommend it, with a few tips:

A Little Goes a Long Way: Truer words could not be spoken. The applicator is a wand, much like a lot of lip glosses. Now do not think of this Potion in the same way: if you can see a drop of it on the tip of the applicator, you're using way too much. The Potion itself is a light nude color, so you should barely be able to see it when it is on. If you can see brushstrokes from the applicator, that's another sign you are using way too much.

One unfortunate thing about this product is where is gets its power: once it is on and dries, it's not going to come off with the swipe of a finger. If you make a mistake and put on too much, you will have to get some warm water and wash it off. Also, one more annoying problem is if you are wearing too much, your eyelid will feel tight and almost sticky. It's pretty annoying, so make sure you put on very little. If put on correctly, nothing will feel out of the ordinary. This product retails for $16-$17, so use a tiny bit to get your money's worth.

Prepare for Intensity!: Not only will this product keep your eyeshadow from moving an inch, it will make colors more intense. For example, I love browns and bronzes for my blue eyes. In the past I felt like I had to reapply excessively to get a decent night look. With the Primer Potion, one sweep of shadow is great for day, and two works for a great night look. And that's it. The intensity also lasts throughout the day, so watch out for putting a lot on before work!

It's Non-Exclusive: Not my favorite type of relationship, but it works well for eyeshadow. I received my Primer Potion with a set of Urban Decay eyeshadows. I've tried the Potion with its own brand and other brands of eyeshadow, and the results are the same: eyeshadow that lasts all day and just won't quit. Use it with anything in your makeup bag, and it will look great!

Overall, I highly recommend Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion for anyone who wants their eyeshadow to look as amazing at 5:30pm as it did at 7:00am. Hope you enjoy it!
